He's a tough grader but he is always willing to give feedback. Not an impossible class but you have to read a lot every day in order to keep up, so expect to put in the work! Only assigns a few essays, a midterm, and a final. Really nice prof & willing to meet with you during his office hours (extra credit if you go over your essay with him!)

I had Dr. Lewis for the last half of Fall 2018. He was a really good prof., but it was a bit hard to judge his style because we had to translate his teaching to the previous prof. of the class's material. Overall, he was an enjoyable prof. and I would take him again.

great teacher. He really improves writing skills and you can tell he really cares about improving the writing/reading/analytical skills of his students (which a lot of freshma REALLY need). Class is appropriately challenging but he is really lenient on homework. I don't know why he has bad reviews, his lectures and the material are so interesting.

If you do not want to be an English major, do NOT take this class. I have written seven research essays, but some require post-scripts, which is basically a second essay describing your first. He is an extremely hard grader, and no matter how hard you work, you will not do as well as deserved. It is VERY hard, and way too much for freshman English.

Challenges you to write papers you probably haven't written before and really makes you think about what you're writing. It isn't just literary analysis, you pick topics that pertain to your interests and write about them from varying views. Overall great professor with good feedback on papers and always willing to help improve your work!

Dr.Lewis is an amazing professor! he is super helpful and his class if very enjoyable. He is super funny and really likes class discussions. His grading is sometimes hard, but if you do the work and actually look like your trying you will receive at least a B. His essays are easy and the only test is the final. Take him!!!!

Dr. Lewis is an amazing teacher!!! The students in the class were boring but if you participated he loved you! You can ask any question you wanted and he would try his best to answer them. Sweet, funny guy. Try to turn in things on time but if you don't he will give you the next day to complete. Take this class!!!

Lectures were often not on topic with the reading material. No real idea on how he graded papers, seemed very arbitrary. I did make material I hated seem slightly interesting. I hated his exams, did not give any time to prepare. He literally wrote it 2 days before he gave it. Each of them. He was alright, but I wouldn't want to take again.

Overall, this class was a good experience though at times I felt his lectures were unclear and fragmentary. However, I felt like I got a substantial overall perspective on the colonial experience that somehow came together despite the fragmented lectures. I loved the reading selection, and would take Dr. Lewis again, though not with much excitement

My absolute favorite professor of all time. I graduated from C of C with a degree in English a few years ago, but I still remember how much I absolutely LOVED his classes. I often found myself lying awake at night thinking about the world's problems, which he presented to us through African/Post-Colonial Lit. Hard grader, but an AMAZING teacher!

Take this professor! He is so nice and passionate about what he teaches. Take good notes and go to class, though, because he doesn't provide study guides. Keeping up with the readings isn't difficult, because they are short and very interesting.

Dr. Lewis is great. He is always ready to lend a helping hand. There is alot of reading, but it is all easy reading. Your papers can be on any topic. He really wants you to write about topics you have passions about. He offers points back when you correct the mistakes on your papers. I would highly rec him!

He is a quite charming person, and you will love and respect him by the end for his talent and personality. I would recommend him to everyone.

Wonderful except for one issue: if you're a fanatical A student, his paper grading will stress you out (I kept getting A-'s, and I write good papers). I got an A, so all is forgiven. Passionate, loves what he teaches; considerate, engaging. Throws a lot of material at you. Paper grading strict. Tests easier. Lots of reading. Recommended.

Prof. Lewis is one of the best profs. in the English department, which is very talented so it says a lot. I did not as well as a would have wished for in his class, but I wasn't all with it. I read a variety of Afircan Lit even though I graduated last May. Take this class and broaden your horizons

African Lit is his passion and it really passed on to me and the whole class. I never took African lit before this class, so it was very challenging. However, he taught some history and politics along with the course, so that made it a lot easier. I highly recommend him; he's very intelligent and kind.

Lewis is very easy to get along with and brings a lot of energy into class most of the time. His writing is difficult to read but you can translate it by midterms. He is really good at grading essays so try and proof check your essay a lot before you turn it in. I would recommend his class to nearly everyone.
