Hes a very nice and caring professor, I liked him as a person. His teaching method isnt very clear. He doesnt lecture he only does in class group work but provides no examples or explanation on what to do. The test are very difficult and youll have to know how to use the very expensive calculator ($180) I wouldnt take him unless u already know calc

He's an amazing professor who does lots of examples, he also does this thing called office hours live where he has his office hours, but does them on facebook live so people can asks questions from the homework and watch it again later to study.

I highly recommend taking this class over the summer semester! He recognizes that people in this class probably aren't too fond of math and tries to make it fun (ie, we played softball and graphed the parabola of the ball). He took time out of his lectures to explain concepts if people were confused, but he does assign a lot of homework.

Dr. Lapp has a good heart and is very willing to help. But he uses a complex calc. that few have experience with. The calc. is used for EVERYTHING, which makes it hard to visualize the problems. Coming from someone who tends to get A's in math, this class was frustrating. I was in and out of his office every other week which is how I managed a B+.

He cares so much and is very accessible for help, but that being said the class is incredibly difficult (more then it should be). I am an honors student and I really struggled. Doug doesn't lecture or really provide examples of problems you would see on the test and the study guide is useless. His class consists of going in depth of like 3 problems

Hard class. Took AP Calculus in high school, passed with an A, my grade in this class isn't even close to that. Lapp is definitely a smart man with a good heart, but the way he teaches the class is very difficult to grasp.

Math is normally my best subject but he made this class awful. He expects you to know most of the subject material before you even come into the class, and the book for the homework doesn't even sound like English so its hard to understand. He also has you buy an expensive complicated calculator. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITH HIM!!

The homework makes it impossible to do your best in the class. I understand the subject matter very well but the homework is so different from anything learned in class or on the exam. And if you don't understand a problem on the hw, well you're completely screwed for the homework quiz! Wish he would've gone over problems in class before the quiz.

Nice dude but his class is literally impossible unless youve taken and passed calculus before. Doesn't teach anything in class. Youll be confused the entire semester. Exams are impossible. Homework is impossible. He requires you to buy a $160 calculator that is impossibly difficult to use and the whole class is dependent on you being able to use it

Dr Lapp did not do thorough examples and taught by having the students rely on the calculator (TI Nspire that is $130 you HAVE to have for the class!). Stay away from him if you do not want to pay $130 for a calculator you will not use again. He often did not explain himself and it was blatantly obvious that he preferred specific students.

Dr. Lapp's calc 2 class is great, IF YOU'VE ALREADY TAKEN CALC 2 and have learned the basics. During class he spends a lot of time on real world applications, and how to use your calculator in solving integrals, etc. However he does not spend enough time developing your written skills, so go to the math center everyday bcuz ur expected to know how.

Dr. Lapp is incredibly knowledgeable about math and science. His passion for the subject really comes through in lectures. He does not use a traditional lecture format, he enjoys group discussion and group work. Overall, I have a better understanding of math because of his teaching and persistence for group work. Highly recommend.

Comment:
Dr. Lapp is knowledgeable, no question. The issue is that teaching a Calc 1 class mostly off proofs (as opposed to how to do the work) caused many to struggle. He likes to over-explain the reason things work, skimping on how to really use the ideas for a test. His reviews are not closely modeled off the tests, and tests often push the time limit.

Dr. Lapp is a really nice guy and wants you to do well if you try, but to get a good grade you have to work your butt off to get it, by doing all the homework and going to his office hours. You MUST buy the TI Nspire CX CAS which is $140 on Amazon. This Class has a lot of physics concepts built in, as well. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, IT'LL SAVE YOU!

Lapp is a great professor to have and he will be there for you when you need help. Most students in his class do not take advantage of his office hours so therefore they are left confused. If you pay close attention to lapp's lectures you will understand the material.

Overall very nice guy, unfortunately that doesn't help you in the class. He explains more of why calc works, not how to actually do it. Have to think very hard on exams, making them hard to do good. He does curve exams though, and excludes lowest HW quiz and lab. MUST GO TO CLASS 100%! I feel he goes above and beyond what is required for Calc I.

I took Calc 1 in the active learning classroom, and I learn better in his interactive style rather than a lecture. Pay attention to the facebook group because he'll put up solutions that end up on homework quizzes (you don't turn homework in). Labs are a pain but they aren't impossible. Tests are hard but he adjusts the grades afterwords.

Taking calc one in the virtual classroom in Dow is the most god awful thing ever. The layout of course material is awful. Have to complete labs about stuff we haven't learned, never know when you will be quizzed. There is no way to keep up with him because he goes way to fast. He is a very nice guy, but that won't help you pass his class.

Really not a bad professor, but here's the bottom line. Do you genuinely like math? Go ahead and take the honors version. Are you actually going to do the homework? If not, don't take this class. A big part of your grade is homework quizzes and if you don't do them, it's not good. Don't just take this for the competency.

Dr. Lapp focuses on teaching the principals behind what you are learning, and often does "math labs" so that you can make the discoveries about things for yourself. Go to class, do the homework, and he is readily available for any help you may need, take advantage of his office hours!!!!
