The first test is hard. You need to identify where a quote came from ( constitution/ dec. of indepedence, author) or an event & why it is important. The second test you need to know about court cases & their outcome. The final exam is based from 2 books. Do not take the class if you do not like essay tests. You do about 9 case briefs. 1 big paper

The key to passing her class is participation. She is very old school.. No Moodle and straight lectures. Sweet lady but if you are the quiet type I would not take her class. If I could do it over I would of tried harder to find a better professor. But like I said she is very sweet just not a great professor.

Makes up her own format for papers and thinks she is an English teacher as well. Did not learn anything new. If you are Southern, she tries to make you feel bad if you are proud of being Southern. If given the choice, I would rather beat my head into the wall. At least I would learn something from it.

I thought this class would be very different from what it turned out to be. The professor is nice, but technologically behind. She doesn't use Moodle at all and occasionally struggles with the computer/projector/mic Don't expect to be able to figure out your exact overall grade. The book is filled with court cases we didn't even look at.

While legal history sounds kind of cool, Professor Oates managed to stop them from being interesting at all. She is boring, and can convey little relevent information during her many lectures. If you want very hard tests, with very strict grading, but you dont want a clear, helpful teacher then take her.

Pretty easy class. The text can be thick at times (18th & 19th century court cases), but she walks you through them. Tests are essays and definitions but are VERY easy as long as you review the study guide and do the reading. Also requires you to write five one page briefs. It's an easy way to guarantee 20% of your final grade. Highly recommended!

She is a little dry and boring, but really encourages and wants people to talk and discuss the readings. Not to hard, and its an easy A if you put the work into it. You have to do the readings to get the material and do well on tests, but they can be interesting.

Throughout the half of the semester that I was in her class I don't know that I retained anything. One time she spent over 45 minutes talking, and didn't say more than three relevant things. She talks in circles the entire time, every class. If I wasn't a history major this probably would have killed my interest entirely.

A lot of different books to buy and read. All tests are essays and not very easy. quite a few papers to write. Nice professor but boring class. I don't know how I stayed awake. If you're gonna take this class, don't take it early in the morning. it will put you back to bed.

Was a deacent teacher, teaching style SUCKED, just straight lectured, absolutely no powerpoints or anything so it got old, goes pretty fast. ALOT of reading too and uses all of 5 textbooks, spent to much time on federalist papers and not enough on Civil War. The research paper is pretty simple and easy grade raiser and she is very helpful on that.

I am currently taking this class. Has a different teaching style. Likes to do a lot of group work. Tests are fairly hard, but can be easy if you read the material. The material is very comprehensive, but she explains it well.

Currently in this class. Didn't see her on this list so I figured I'd add her. If you need or want to take US History, I'd go with Professor Oates. The quizzes are very easy, and the tests can be too. The only thing is you HAVE to do the reading. If you're lazy, you won't do well. The questions are the most basic things. I'd take her again.

I don't complain about most professors. In fact, no others in the UNC Charlotte history dept. I made an A in this class, BUT believe Oates is a horrible professor. Never moves. Stands and reads her notes in monotone voice EVERY class.
