This professor should be used for a case study on bad some professors are at teaching. She is incredibly rude and does not know at all how to communicate with her students in a mutually respectful way. Very full of herself. She does not create and environment to share opinions, instead an echo chamber of her own thoughts and ideas. Stay away.

This professor told me I was going for hell for being LGBTQ and repeatedly talked about women who have had abortions going to hell, she was cruel in the way she spoke about people she disagreed with. I took her during COVID and she was not flexible or helpful at all.

Do not take this Professor Formicola if you do not have to. She is rude, and insensitive to opinions different from her own. She is not helpful in actually learning about political parties, and her grading is different based on her personality of the day. She does not explain how or why she grades you. She is the worst professor SHU has seen.

I would not take any class she teaches because you do not know what kind of grade she will give you. Grading is not anonymous and she has favorites. She can really hurt your GPA. She is not available outside of class without an appointment. I am not aware of anyone who is better off in life from taking her class or knowing her.

Professor Formicula is a fantastic professor. Her teaching style forces you to learn, but she's tough. You have to be willing to work hard for your grade. If you slack off, she will not sympathize.

Hands down a great professor. Extremely knowledgeable with regard to politics. She does however go to great pains to build up basic rhetorical skills in her students by saying things like dont say I think when someone uses that in a reply and will react when she asks someone a question and they reply that they havent read. Do work youre fine

She knows what she is talking about. She is actually a bit of an expert in her field. But as a professor? Run. You need to put in 100% to do ok. Miss class? You're done. Dont come prepared? You're done. Very into the "public shaming" concept, if you aren't prepared she will call you out. This CORE course is just not worth dealing with her. Avoid.

I would not take any class that she teaches because it could hurt your GPA. I found it difficult to reach her outside of class. She will not see you in her office unless you have an appointment. The one time I walked into her office she was doing a crossword puzzle and told me she couldn't see me because I did not have an appointment.

I only took Dr. Formicola during my last semester for senior seminar and I wished I took her earlier in my under graduate career. You can learn a lot from her and she's always willing to help as long as you put forth an effort. She definitely knows her stuff and some of her former students who are politicians will agree!

Not the best but not the worst. Pros: Knows the field well and has worked in it as a councilwoman. Also challenges students to be better scholars of politics. Also very clear with lecturing. Her tests are quizzes are not challenging with some preparation. Cons: Can be rude when dealing with students, especially if they do not assignments.

Dr. Formicola is a nice woman and her lectures are interesting, but she is a bit hot-and-cold. If your on her good side, which isn't hard, she's nice. She did curve our midterms and finals, and there only one essay that is kinda short (5-7 Pgs).

If you're genuinely interested in what she has to teach, she is the best you'll get. It's definitely not an easy A, but you'll learn a lot from her so it's totally worth it.

Worst professor I've had. Calls on people randomly looking for a specific answer, and doesn't like it if you don't have the exact answer she's looking for. Don't take unless you're a political science major.

She expects a lot of her students, but truly helps you out when you ask. Have to be prepared for class she will call on people randomly and will not be kind if you don't know the answer. However if you do succeed shes a wonderful person to have in your corner. Highly recommend

Dr. Formicola is the classic American university professor. Her class is difficult enough that you need to work for your A. She uses the Socratic method to help you draw your own conclusions out of the reading you've done. You MUST be prepared for class; if you haven't done the readings she will know and she will embarrass you. The best at SHU!

I took Formicola with every intent on doing well. I came to class, did the readings, completed my 15pg paper on time, had a great presentation and met with her outside of class to understand the material....F..this was CORE....she shows no compassion and no understand. Do not take unless you are a political science major or you have a death wish.

I totally agree with the last user who ranked Dr. Formicola. I got an A in her class, as well. If you do your work, come to class, and show respect...she will love you. She was really nice to me when I had her and she shows that she really cares about her students. She's wonderful...not easy, but awesome anyway.

If you respect her, she will respect you. I got an A and they said it was impossible. It wasn't the hardest A I have ever earned either. I've learned so much from her that will stick with me forever. She's the best at SHU.
