Comment:
Listening to his ramblings was so very tiresome; infuriating, too--after all, one way or another, I paid for the course. And he got paid. Good poet? No. Flashes of brilliance in the occasional phrase, and sometimes an entire (shorter) poem offers an effect above average for a little magazine's offerings. In sum, his lectures and poems are flabby.

One paper due at the last class of the semester - that's it. That's your only assignment/test/etc. We all showed up to class with our papers and he never showed up to class.

Dr. Heffernan is the most wonderful man who really cares for his students and his career. His lectures were sporadic but the man is a genius and all are lucky to know him and be able to take his graduate course!

I took Dr. Heffernan for poetry and graduate literature when we were both much younger and he was an inspiration to all. If you don't like someone who is brilliant and who knows and writes poetry, then don't take this class. I am now 67 and would take another class from him today.

Look, Dr. Heffernan is smart and he's a good poet, but he doesn't even use Blackboard or email, or make a syllabus. He doesn't take roll, he doesn't even teach any real material. I had him for poetry and it was the biggest waste of my time, and I'm an English major. Huge disappointment and was only graded on one paper that I luckily made an A on.

Well, this class was one of the most sporadic classes I have ever taken. He is brilliant and tells stories like your grandpa. I hardly went to class (he didn't really take attendance and there were no assignments throughout the semester), did the final paper, and ended with an A. Easy, but unorganized class. I would still definitely recommend him!

Dr. Heffernan is a brilliant poet/academic. Yes, he 'lectures' a lot, but it's more like hearing stories from your fascinating, crazy old uncle. He has a wealth of knowledge; you'll have to keep him on topic. Wonderful man who actually cares about the success of students. No tests, and usually just one long project at the end of the semester.

Dr. Heffernan is brilliant, and yes he rambles a lot. If you can't handle the ramblings...then, ramble on. He is knowledgable, but teaches through analogies and stories which I found absolutely fascinating (although tiresome at times.) He's not for everyone's taste, but you will learn about poetry IF you pay attention (read b/w the lines, yo!)

Comment:
This professor is for the simple student. If you simply want to hear tall tales of Ireland and Paris, then this man is your man. He'll talk about facts he's made up, and will exagerate any poet's life to benefit his tall tale of (former) hyper-masculinity. Don't expect a class with no sense of purpose because it's his world, and only his.

If you are a serious student and you ever have the opportunity to study with Dr. Heffernan, do it. The man is a genius. His lectures are in themselves works of art. Does the teacher ramble, or is the student's mind that rambles? The class I took was driven by an accomplished professor's curiosity and fascination, not by a run-of-the-mill outline.

I really enjoyed his Poetry class. Did he go off on tangents? Yes, but it was still interesting. His class was run with open discussion, which is wonderful! He also knew a lot of interesting information about the poets as well as the poems. He has a lot of life experience and is willing to share it with anyone who asks! I enjoyed his class.

Nice. Loves the material he teaches, but likes to go off on tangents about either really technical details or irreverent information... Good guy though.

If a student pays attention, he/she can learn a lot from this professor. He does tend to ramble, but he is incredibly smart. He is very good one-on-one and he is helpful if a student asks and shows interest. And he doesn't act like his class is the only one you have. He is fair.

He would constantly interrupt people and then complain about how they never contributed to the discussions. A better title for this course would have been, "The Fascinating Life & Times of Michael Heffernan." Still, he was sometimes helpful in spite of himself. He can be a really nice guy, but he chooses not to be one about 90% of the time.

Good Christ it is time for the Heff to retire. I had him for Creative Writing and Poetry, and both times he just rambles. Never ever subject yourself to a class with Heffernan. My favorite moment was when a fellow student wrote a poem mocking his tendency to talk about his ex-wife all the time, and everyone in the class but Heff got the joke.

In the midst of his seemingly endless (and often seemingly pointless) ramblings, you can learn A LOT. You either lose patience with him or find his verbal wanderings endearing. Sometimes a little bit of both.

Comment:
Heffernan is very knowledgable and insightful, not to mention constuctively critical. He goes off on tangents, which only serves to make the class more interesting. He realizes that life is only a series of tangents. Heffernan is not only a great poet, but also a man from which much could be learned
