Super interesting and knowledgeable prof. I enjoyed the class and would recommend it to anyone interested in the region. There was a fair bit of reading, but aside from that there were only a couple quizzes, so apart from reading it wasn't hard to manage at all.

An excellent prof, knows what he is talking about and is willing to discuss with any of his students. His knowledge of the modern Middle East is astounding and mirrors the hard work that he has put forth into both his research and his teaching habits. Would recommend him to anyone that is interested in history, UVic is lucky to have him!

Course was pretty lecture-heavy, but Dr. Bunton is a very good prof who knows how to keep the class engaged. Gave very clear grading criteria for papers, and told the class exactly what to expect on midterms.

Dr Bunton is one of UVic best professors, without a doubt. He's an Oxford & Cambridge-trained historian and is actually a leading international scholar on Middle Eastern history. In class, you can tell he knows what he is talking about. Lectures are pretty good and he gives you lots of feedback. Great chance to study under a leading scholar at UVic

Comment:
His lectures consisted of just reading from the textbook and carelessly jumping between topics and ideas. You're better off just staying home and taking notes from the textbook (which is actually well-written). The weighting of the assignments seemed illogical, but the midterm was easy and the essay was ok. I would not recommend this class with him

He is a kind and very approachable prof, but the course was really hard. Heavy reading, long lectures, hard final.

I really enjoyed this class. Bunton is an excellent prof. He does sometimes get off topic and ramble but it's usually beneficial. Reading the textbook is absolutely vital if you want to do well on tests. For the essay assignment, we were assigned to write a book review. I found it more difficult than a research paper but the book was interesting.

He is a great guy, but he has this tendency to switch topics mid-sentence, and then not go back to the original thing he was talking about. Makes for very scattered lectures. Also assigned two very large books (400+ pages each) to be read by the end of the term, so as to discuss in the last two weeks of class... really??

Bunton is a great guy. He has a open-minded, un-biased way of lecturing, which can be rare in history classes. He really respects his students and their ideas. He does tend to ramble a bit though.

Bunton repeats the themes that are on the midterm/final multiple times, so that was really useful. He doesn't outright say it like some profs, but if you hear him repeating something he has said a few times it is generally for a reason. He's an easy marker and doesn't expect to much formality when it comes to assignments.

Bunton is awesome. He is a good lecturer and deals with difficult issues in an extremely careful and balanced way. Not a particularly hard marker on tests, although you will have to work pretty hard on papers, he doesn't just accept junk with a bunch of footnotes like some history profs. Super approachable and good to talk to in office hours.

Great Prof. The best seminar course to date. Seminars are meant to be student orientated so he did a great job of balancing readings, discussion and teachings with our papers. Extremely intelligent, insightful and helpful. The best prof I've had at UVic yet. Bunton is one of the best at UVic and what a professor should be.

Great prof, knows his topic and is enthusiastic. Actually cares about his students and is dedicated to becoming better and better. Great non-partisan view. He's not easy, but you'll actually learn something. Buntin is the reason they can charge 450$ a class. Also, generally speaks on separate panels related to the classes in his off time!

Poor prof; had 13 3hr lectures and he missed one and wasted 2 on introductory material. Students did presentations and practically taught the rest of the classes; he did very little. Quite slanted PoV on the mideast. Could have learned what I did from the class just by reading text; did not get my money's worth. Pity, b/c topic v. interesting.
