Ive really enjoyed reading both his positive and negative reviews. Honestly, if your looking handouts, Gene is not your teacher. Lets face it, if you cant handle his classes or his personality, youre probably not cut out to make it in the music business.

Gene is one of the most knowledgeable profs at the university, and he can convey his knowledge to anyone willing to learn it. His class is unforgiving of idiocy. If you are taking his class, make sure to train your ears - he likes to play chords on the piano as examples, and if you can identify the types of chords, you'll learn a lot more.

It's a tough course. If you don't do the work you won't pass, and Gene won't waste his time helping you. But if you do all the work and have questions he'll be more than willing to answer them in his office or during class. Don't just whine about his being unclear, ask him again if you don't understand. You get what you put in, nothing more.

I don't know what Gene did on the 29th to impress you all but he is still probably one of the worst proffs I have ever encountered. He is useless at explaining new information to a person and is rude and cruel to you if you don't understand. Personally I am offended in his classes and sometimes feel that he is almost abusive of his powers.

Gene Smith leads this music program at St. FX. He deserves credit for being available to talk to whenever the student needs to and guiding those who have the appropriate work ethic. He has even given lessons to those outside of his studio. Free of charge. Those who can't appreciate him just aren't working at all. Thats a fact.

Gene Smith has taught me more in the past semesters than I have learned from any other educator. His knowledge of theory, jazz improvisation and the music world in general are top class. Having a head of the dept this experienced is fantastic and I, along with a majority of others appreciate what he does for every aspect of this department.

Gene Smith is a sexy trombone machine. He teaches theory just the way I like it - hard and incomprehensible. He clears it up if you need it, you know. Thorough wipe-down, if you get me.

Worst head of department possibly in the whole world. Treats his staff and students like they're a waist of his time. Makes sure you know that you are a worm when compared to him. refuses to give assistance and rarely shows up to my lessons. Something needs to be done about him.

There is more to the world of music than Jazz. He is responsible for intentionally removing any other type of music on this campus. Where is the pep band, musical theatre, etc? Shame.

He's a great musician, but should not be teaching theory classes. he doesn't know how to break things down, and explain things to poeple who are new at theory.

Miserable human being, determined to make others miserable by any means necessary. NY experience - please - that hack hasn't been in the mainstream for 20 years. Plays like a student, acts like a dick. What else can I say?

Gene is the real deal. New York experience at work. Sure he's dry, and he doesn't suffer fools, but he knows you have to be tough to make it in the REAL music world where nobody's going to hold your hand. High school's over, kids; time to learn how to take criticism. Great player and director!

i don't what he's usually like for a teacher but when he filled in for prof. Leblanc for three weeks, I was completely confused. he obviously made no effort to find out where we were in the course, or follow Leblanc's outline.
