Professor Underwood is one of the best. He truly cares for his students and wants them all to succeed. He is very genuine and understanding. His class is mainly a few large papers sprinkled in with some discussion question assignments. He is one of the best professors for RWS. I highly recommend him to any student looking to take the class.

I had Professor Underwood for both semesters this year and he has been a great professor overall. He provides you with all the information you need to know in his lectures. He gives students plenty of time to work on their papers. If you understand the prompts, you'll most likely pass the class with an A. I definitely recommend him.

Kind of pretentious. Barely had any lectures, which can be good or bad depending on what you want. Super vague and un-descriptive when giving feedback on papers. Grades really tough. Super unorganized. Assignments are always filled with mistakes. He even accidentally deleted one of our assignments and made us redo them.

Uncommunicative and not understanding. You must agree with him or he will not like you. Gives you stink eye on campus. Failed my friend with no explanation or response.

This class is very disorganized, the calendar of when assignments are due was always changing. I met with the writing fellow on the 2 essays we did which helped a bit but this class is mostly you showcasing your writing rather than learning how to write. If you took AP Lit in high school, this class will be easier for you.

Writing essays used to be really hard, but after I took Underwood it just clicked for me. He is the BEST writing professor! I know people think he's a harsh grader, but all it takes is understanding the prompts he gives you. The criteria is very clearly stated and you get to understand what he expects if you go to the lectures, so don't miss those.

A bit confusing. My classmates and I would really help each other out because of how unclear he was most of the time with assignments. Make use of the writing fellow and don't be afraid to ask questions. He gets back to you pretty fast.

The grade you receive for this class heavily relies on what grades you get on the essays throughout the semester. There is little other class work that is graded. The essay prompts are a bit vague which makes them confusing because Underwood wants students to find deeper meaning in their writing. He is a tough grader. Make use of the writing fellow

Mr. Underwood was a great professor! He didn't grade too harshly and gave many opportunities to have him or peers review your paper. If you apply the prompt correctly you'll most likely get an A! During lectures he holds interesting discussions about materials relevant to the next writing prompt! The whole class is 4 papers and participation points

Professor Underwood is pretty laid back and will tell you exactly how to fix your rough draft when you go in for conferences. My main complaint is that he never posted grades on blackboard so except for essays there were never any grades given for individual assignments.

He is a great teacher. I've learned a lot in his class and so far have found he doesn't grade very hard (contrary to popular belief). I got a 95% on an essay I wrote the morning of and he spaces them out for you very nicely. Great guy and cares about his students. I recommend.

Underwood is easily the most boring person I have ever met. His RWS is nothing comparable to the other classes. You will read books, philosophical works, and random stuff just to write papers on deep thoughts that make no sense. He will never let you out early, even if there is nothing to be done. Good luck getting above a 80, impossible.

Honestly Prof. Underwood is by far one of my favorite professors so far. Even though the class is very lenient on work load, he does grade really rough. During my semester, he did give people C's for simply having written some sort of analysis on the writing so he is chill too. A lot of reading but he does guide you in lecture so don't ditch.

Everyone who says they didn't like his class is either impatient/ chose to write the paper the night before. loves philosophy / authors like Tolkien. Classes will mostly consist of group discussion. Hes like the nerdy grandpa u never had, very old school, doesn't use Blackboard or any tech in class. Be patient w him and DO NOT PROCRASTINATE PAPER

Honestly class wasn't that bad, you just have to put in a little effort if you want a good grade. He's not a bad teacher, and he was really helpful during conferences. Class is kinda boring since it was an 8am but he tries to make it more enjoyable at least.

Did not like his class at all. Makes students buy a $30 book of articles that he puts together (just look the articles up online). Only 3 papers throughout the semester each 5 pages but he never posts grades. The papers are also graded so hard that it's like impossible to get an A.

Get ready to ready and be ready to fully understand an article on your own, there's quizzes on the readings. The readings are easy but make sure you read the assigned homework. Only 3 papers, 5 pages each. Underwood is a tough grader but make sure you go to his office hours and get feedback on your paper before turning it in.

I loved this professor! He is definitely a tough grader however, you really learn a lot if you actually read and participate in discussions. My writing skills improved so much from this professor. I think the reason that I did well was because I always went to the office hours and asked a million questions. Great class!

very hard grader, also very vague and doesn't help much in what he wants in papers. Because of the fact that he never showed up it was hard to write something and know what he wanted.

Comment:
He was sick a lot which meant class was often cancelled, which resulted in not a lot of explanation of assignments. I found the assignments and prompts to be vague and was often confused as to what I should be doing in my papers. He isn't an easy grader.
