Comment:
Christopher Leach is a very hard professor for anyone, really. He is very strict with his note taking, requiring a small PSA to be done weekly. His assignments are vague and he is not an approachable person. He teaches what *he* thinks history is, not what it is, and if you don't agree with him, you will fail.

He gives so much reading every week and makes you take notes on the reading, only thing is that the notes aren't for marks but if you don't hand them in you lose marks. And you have to do YOUR own notes a very specific way or you lose marks. But, for the only 2 assignments he gives he is super unclear on what he wants and doesn't give good feedback

Comment:
Chris is supportive in his marking and assignment comments. But get ready to read 60+ pages per week. In a low-level history class. In addition, pages of homework every week. Also, his expectations for assignments are very difficult to understand. You kind of have to guess until you meet his invisible expectations. Good content, hard to understand.

Lectures for days, super boring, monotone. Marks super hard, unapproachable and condescending. Did not enjoy this class and I will be avoiding him for the rest of my history minor.

His teaching style is different than I am used to. Although, he does give good feedback on your papers and if you pay attention to those comments you will get a better mark next time around. For his final we had to take notes on the readung and do a book review, which was a little tough, but manageable. Amazing prof as I learned alot!

Great Prof! but really tough marker, assigns alot of reading which is typical of a history course except he assigns at least 2 books to read in their entirety to write papers on. assigns you weekly readings in which you have to write notes on and hand in each class, but you get these notes during the final exam, you get the question ahead.

Chris is an awesome prof! He has 1.5 papers (a short paper to assist the larger) and 2 exams. The exams are very intimidating, 1 large essay question, but if you study and take the help he offers you should do well. I learned a lot from his style of teaching. Lectures are very entertaining , reading material is interesting. Loved this class!

Really nice prof and really knows what he's talking about. Grading is pretty good, you don't need to focus all on dates and names but larger concepts. Lectures are long but not too boring, but a lot of reading.

I am taking a 400 level class this semester as well, and I would say the two are comparable. The first mid-term is a paper is worth 30%, and without getting feedback from anything prior, I had no idea what this guy was looking for. I'm happy I did well, but I'm not pleased about the expectations from a first-year course. Also, VERY boring lectures.

Really boring lectures, does not mark nicely to first year courses. he expects that everyone reads the book and wont go over any of it in class. Wouldnt recommend to take this course unless you were a strong history paper student.

I was surprised when Chris started WWII with the atomic bomb on the first day of class. No, not the bombs dropped on Japan, but the reading load expectations for the course. It caused widespread devastation to my semester. Despite the ridiculous expectations for readings, I do feel that I grew a lot in my understanding of WWII.

Very nice prof! More focused on bigger ideas rather than memorizing dates and names for exams. There is also week to week homework, but nothing hard. Overall, very funny and passionate about the subject.

Amazing Prof. Lots of reading from the textbook and online documents. you must hand in a typed sheet of notes each class based on the readings and online docs that can be used in mid term and final. He is very passionate and knowledgeable on the topics he covers. really nice guy, participation matters.

I was taking a 400 level course at the same time and it felt like I had the same amount of homework/expectations. He was interesting and engaging, but high expectations. He does give good feedback and stuff. Plus you hand in one sheet of notes each week and you can take them into the final exam. Also my whole life exploded and he was very gracious

Comment:
While class discussions were very engaging and the assigned readings were very interesting, this did not balance out the sheer number of papers. The instructions given for the papers were unclear and left the choice of topic very open for students. However, upon grading, he seemed to mark based on a different topic than the one presented.

Chris is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about the material and knows his stuff. We had a number of written assignments which were quite draining and there is a ton of reading- like many upper-level history classes. Chris genuinely cares about his students and is a wonderful professor.

Comment:
Chris is passionate about history, and will veer off lecture material in favour of class participation and questions, which is great. He was very aware that this was a first year course, and graded accordingly. You definitely need to keep up with readings, though he's more than happy to spend extra time or explain things if you simply ask.

Chris is a great prof. He is clear on his expectations. There is a fair bit of reading and there are small assignments based on them each week BUT these assignments are given back to you for the midterm and final. He is a fair grader and gives clear feedback. I would take every history class with him!

Comment:
Chris' History 418 class on WWI is excellent. He is very knowledgeable and shows a lot of interest in the subject. If you do your reading and are prepared to participate in the class, you will learn a lot. He loads on the reading and assignments, but not unusual for an upper levels course. A great prof!!
