Dr. Hodgson is one of those teachers that will go to the ends of the earth to help you if she thinks you actually care about the material she's teaching. Do the readings and put some effort in and she will help you grow so much! One of my favourite profs!

I was really let down by how awful she is as a prof. I was hoping for an inspiring class and instead was treated to one of the most disjointed and convoluted courses ever. Syllabus is unclear, no continuity between texts, and she just rambles on about nothing. Her marking is arbitrary and her ego is far too inflated for her abilities.

boring material and lecture style. She has high expectations and only provides a few heavily graded assignments.

Elizabeth gives engaging lectures and is one the most well-versed profs in the English department. Fair grader, and as long as you show up to most of the classes, you'll do fine.

I had one of the best english classes that ive ever had at UBC. Liz was excellent at classroom management and made each lecture memorable and fun. I left each class feeling like I understood the topic well and she constantly made sure that we were learning and challenged and engaged. A+++

Comment:
Her lectures don't add much to the material. 8 Shakespeare plays in the syllabus, barely covered each one. Very opinionated - dissed the editor for one of the plays. Pretty much told a student giving valid suggestions to another student that his advice was dumb. Worked like crazy on the research paper and got a B++ which is a bit insulting.

Great discussion, very knowledgable, open to ideas with evidence, encourages participation, i thought maybe i would get bored of shakespeare but it just kept on giving, really fun (but i understand why not all people can get 'into' the reading) Translate, dont just pass over archaic words

Found the lectures somewhat pointless- didn't go to half of them except when we started talking about poems. I have taken ASTU 150 before and found that class to be way more helpful with writing itself, we didn't get any advice on how to write a paper, just discussed the meaning of books. Learned nothing substantial, quite disappointed.

As a professor, all she can do is keep people's interest during her lectures, but otherwise nothing she teaches is helpful or useful to her midterms, exams and the final. AVOID this professor since your grade COMPLETELY depends on your TA.

I had the 2hr Eng110 class as well. She does keep you engaged for the 2hrs (group work, reading passages, etc.), however you don't learn anything that could be helpful on the essays or other required work. TAs do all the marking, so if you have a hard or unfair you're pretty much going to get a bad mark. Avoid AVERY CZARNECKI as a TA.

Although her lectures may enage her students and have the occassional group assignment, she doesn't provide any real material to help in the in-class essays, term paper and final. She essentially leaves all her marking to her TAs and as a result, your marks REALLY depend on what TA you get. I got a pretty strict TA, if possible avoid Mark Diotte!!!

She keeps her lectures alive.. I have that 2 hour lecture as well. Really long lecture but she keeps you engaged by giving group assignments and what not. TAs do ALL the marking. So depending how how easy or hard your TA is will result in what type of mark u have.

a great prof for engl 110! the 2 hour lecture was a bit of a marathon but that's not her fault. she's entertaining and her assignments are completely fair. i had fun in the class despite the "group work", but it's needed to break up the long lecture. and she doesn't mark any of the assg's, the TAs do (get bettina, she's awesome!).

I don't quite know what to make of her. I didn't find her nearly as difficult as my peers, but the average in our classroom was disturbingly low for an Honours seminar. But within the classroom we all seemed to be on the same page. And she reminds me a bit of Slughorn.

LISTEN UP ALL YOU 1st year students.....especially science one's who are goaded into taking english. I took her and she didn't even LOOK at your assignments. The TA's marked like PhD committees. I had a decent 88% in Engl 12 but ended getting a 55% here and she said - awesome to that. In my opinion, take engl 112 with Dr. McDermott.

I agree with everyone who commented on this course (ENG 110) so far. You don't need to go to her lectures, just head straight for your TA's seminars. The material she teaches is so obvious and unhelpful. Sometimes I sit in the class and wonder why the heck she is still there. Hodgson doesn't mark, but the TAs expect SO MUCH from you.
