I took Klems under the assumption she was a good starter programming teacher. What I got was a professor that had an aversion to answering questions. She would get angry, assume you weren't present for the lesson, and give a long lecture about attendance every time you ask her about anything. I just stopped asking questions and took my grade.

I had Martha for an encryption/security class in the 80's... 8AM, I'd sometimes fall asleep and sometimes get beaned with an eraser (that I'd try to use as a pillow). Learned LOTS from Martha, stuff I use every, single, day in my career. Thanks Martha.

She is the best programming teacher I've had at wiu. Explains material VERY thouroughly, sometimes too much. Programming assignments due every week. If you get behind she is more than willing to help you. Take her.

Excellent Professor. I have had Klems before, and I always pick her for a class I need. Her classes are always easy A's, but that's not to say that you don't learn the material. There are no textbooks, only handouts that she teaches from. There are a few slip-ups from time to time, but she gets back on track right away.

Excellent instructor. Very easy to get along with. She works with you and is very relaxed on assignment due dates. After taking one of her courses you will definitely know more about the subject matter. I cannot give enough praise for Martha Klems.

Martha is one of the best instructors at WIU. She explains material clearly and will also reiterate it constantly throughout the semester. She really cares about helping her students succeed and is there for all of us. Unlike most professors, she checks her email very frequently! Take her for as many CS classes as you can!

Amazing teacher, amazing person. Slightly eccentric, but it makes her teaching that much better. Unbelievably caring towards students that show they want to learn, and even reaches out to students that clearly do not want to learn. Will take the time needed to teach you, no matter what. Is even good enough to actually teach you through emails...

Very nice woman. Class is really really easy. I started the program just last semester knowing NOTHING (and didn't learn much from the previous class) and have yet to even miss a point. Just from her class, I think have a much firmer grasp of Java and programming in general. Take her! She answers email promptly unlike some other profs I've had.

Klems is awesome, if you are having help she is always willing to point you in the right direction. 3 quizzes all semester with 1 of them being a "pop" quiz. Very nice as a teacher and a person. Loved the class this year and will be taking her again. As the previous commenter said if I could take her for all classes I would. Take Klems!

If I could have Martha Klems teach all my CS classes I would. She made learning a programming language an easy task for someone who had very minimal prior experience. If you want to learn JAVA take this class. She is fantastic!

Klems is the best CS teacher in the department. Very helpful and very straight forward. I had java with other teachers and didn't learn a thing. Took a database class with her and now i completely understand java and how to program in the language. Always willing to help if you ask.

Definitely second the review that said this was a poor follow-up to Litman's 214. Honestly spent more time correcting her code handouts than writing my own--which had to be done, because she refuses to let you replace her base code and disapproves of solutions that aren't the one she's looking for. Her teaching style is pretty scattershot.

Good teacher. Really knows what she is talking about. If you have no idea how to write codes it is difficult but she will help. As long as you attend class she will make appointments with you. Tests are difficult if you find java confusing. She has a new program due almost every week or every other day the class meets.

Martha is an awesome teacher. She's been teaching CS forever and you can tell that she knows what she's doing. Her homework is hard but she will help you until you have it done and she's a pretty easy grader too. You really have to go to all of her classes to get whats going on even if she doesn't take attendance.

Java was a hard beast for me to wrap my brain around and I had horrible teachers leading up to this class, so I was very intimidated going in. She is an excellent teacher, she should be teaching 211, 212 and 214 to give the students a better foundation. Always willing to help. But like the other comments said, if your SuperJavaMan you'll be bored.

Just keep in mind that this isn't a coding class, it's a data structures class and you won't be disapointed. She hands you most of the code you need to do the assignments so they're generally quite easy(although sometimes time consuming).

Klems is a good teacher if you have no idea what you are doing. If you can program and aren't retarded, the pace will be slow and you probably won't learn much. Not a good follower to Litman's 214, since his is actually harder then this class. Take someone else then Klems if you want to learn. If you want an easy A or need a lot of help, take her.

Comment:
She does very well teaching CS 350 but honestly you will not learn that much taking 395 from her. Avoid this class if she teaches it. These ratings are off because it should say how much did you learn not how easy was the class.
