All grades are based on quizzes and exams and he does NOT go easy. They are 100% write in answers and you have to know EVERYTHING said during lectures. I said "brown fat is used for heating the body" and he wanted "rapid heating" so I didn't get any credit. That is just one example and its like that for every single question. I do NOT recommend

He is the one professor I have had that I have felt like was setting me up for failure. Majority of the class does not do well on exams, and he still refuses to shift his approach. You have to know every single thing he says, as he tests on very random content. He very clearly knows students struggle, but offers no help. True for all of his classes

This professor is the absolute worst, he is setting his students up for failure and does not seem to care about them whatsoever. He sits on his high stool and looks down on us making us feel dumb, no matter how hard we try. DO NOT RECCOMEND HIM.

This professor is truly the worst professor I have had in my 6 years of college. He seems to be setting his students up for failure. He is not personable what so ever and seems to never be available for questions. I would recommend to avoid this professor if you are able.

His tests don't test on what you know, they test on what you memorized. I am never taking a class with this professor again if I can help it. He is a smart person, but he just does not know how to teach.

Comment:
Dr. Bruggink is a nice guy but he is not a great professor (at least in this class). His tests are unnecessarily hard; they're fill in the blank and short answer. I definitely was not the only one constantly stressed about this class the whole semester. On a lighter not, labs were fun. But overall, would not take this class if you don't have to.

Dr. Bruggink is a great guy who has done really cool research. Many people say his lectures are boring but I enjoyed them and learned a lot, you just have to turn your brain on. His tests are long answer and you have to be able to apply the concepts you learn- really tough but that's the whole point right?

Incredibly difficult exams. He takes pride in the difficulty of his grading. Not effective at teaching the material, rather chooses questions that leave one wondering where he pulled them from despite having read the book and notes completely. Do not take a class with this guy, he will make you second guess your interest in ecology.

I came into the class expecting to learn the fundamentals of ecology, instead he taught irrelevant studies that had almost nothing to do with the subject he was teaching about and then would test you on the specifics of the studies. I think he should stay in the woods away from teaching.

He's one of my favorite professors at NMU. He has very clear easy to follow powerpoints, and the material is interesting. Attend lectures and take notes if you want to be successful on tests, and study all the details, not just the overall concepts (he gives tests more like a history teacher would than a biology teacher). He's easygoing and kind

May be a nice guy but he is a failure as a professor. Tests are multiple choice via Educat. Tests over minutia that isn't important to learning. Seems more interested in making the class more difficult material. I've had better 400 level courses. Waste of money, waste of time. Wouldn't recommend. Disappointed in quality of education with this one

Very dull, tends to trail off and lecture under his breath so he can be difficult to follow. He's also very knitpicky on his exams. If he tells you an exam is only going to cover a certain page range, read the whole chapter anyway, because chances are, he's lying or he's changed his mind last minute w/o warning the class..hes a real piece of work!!!

His exams are not over general knowledge. He picks out small sentences in the book and tests over that. He's very dull and hard to understand where he's going with his lectures. Avoid him at all costs. TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE!

Terrible prof. Hours and hours of studying are needed to just pass his exams. The information/concepts are not difficult to grasp, his exams are designed to make you second guess yourself and fail. Spends about a lecture and a half on each chapter, sometimes less, and memorize all the information in order to do well. Some questions have a-h answers

His tests are ridiculous, you should grasp overall terms, yet you get nit-picky questions that only have a sentence in the book on them.

Well the class is not easy and he sure doesn't seem to make it any easier. I don't think he's a bad teacher he just is very nit picking about his exams, over things that don't really matter in the end, it's Ecology.... But I think most people really just think the class should be easy when it is a 200 level class and maybe you should work harder.

Though he loses his train of thought easily, the lectures are still easy to understand if you pay attention, which I'll admit can be difficult at times. The labs are intense, I spent many hours studying, so be prepared to work if you take this class.
