Good prof but you have to be ready to work hard. He has mandatory attendance and he assigns long readings for every class. He expects good writing but also gives good feedback. Participation in class discussion makes up a big part of your grade so you must understand the readings.

There are two timed essays each worth 20% that you only get one hour to do. Im not the best writer but I felt that he marked fairly, however I wished he made his expectations more clear about what he was looking for given the time constraints of a timed essays.

Jerry was alright, marked pretty fair. The course has three in class essays (timed) and a final research essay (includes a class presentation), other than that no extra assignments. It was quite reading heavy, but it was cool reading literature from a variety of different time periods and countries. Not enjoyable but not bad.

Good prof and cares about his students. I'm not very good at English myself, but I am able to separate my performance from his ability to teach. Lots of readings but some are pretty interesting. I would not recommend this class if you are not able to write essays in a timed manner as it gets very stressful.

Jerry was not a bad prof but the amount of reading was absolutely insane. There were 10 assigned readings with 6 of those being between 300-400 pages and since the class is once a week, he expects you to read them before each class. Despite all of this, I found him to be quite the easy marker.

He is elitist, casually racist, and arrogant. His opinion is the only right opinion. Conveniently singles out poc and gets them confused with each other. When u get singled out you get the third degree and even if you are giving a good answer he will dismiss it unless you are yt. Belittles you. Insane amount of reading. dont take unless ur eng maj

Dr. Varsava was amazing. His lectures are interesting and he actually connects with his students. He's very approachable and marks fairly. However, this is a very reading-intensive course. He also takes attendance at the beginning of each lecture and assigns participation marks.

If you want a good grade in his class, you definitely want to participate as much as possible. He's a great guy and cares about everyone's grades, but there's a lot of reading to be done.

He takes his class very seriously. His class is very reading intensive and some of the books he covers have heavy topics. He presents everything very respectfully and manages to include some humor in his lectures despite the seriousness of the issues he covers. Overall a good teacher and a fair marker.

Meh. Lecture's dragged on, went onto irrelevant tangents, some obscure and boring choices for readings. Easy pass, easy credit though.

Professor Varsava was eccentric, but his lectures were interesting. The texts he assigned were a little bit too political and graphic for my taste, and he was very opinionated, but never put students down. He's very knowledgeable and his marking is fair. Overall, a pretty good prof.

Really interesting class, Professor Varsava is extremely intelligent. I would definitely recommend this class if you are interested in American Lit and are looking to improve your writing and reading skills, because this class will do that. Not a hard marker, but worth your effort.

He will make you feel stupid if you ask him questions. We know you are authority of your field, but that is NOT the excuse you can humiliate people!

Jerry assigned excellent texts and engaged the class in meaningful discussions. The reading could be heavy and it was important to know all of the texts very well for the final. However, the two assignments had very clear outlines and the midterm was given a narrow focus so those were relatively easy to prepare for. A balanced course overall.

He was a pretty good professor, definitely extremely knowledgeable in his field. I found he didnt have much tolerance for alternative student analysis, but he is genuinely an expert so its warranted. I wouldnt necessarily recommend him to someone who isnt already a fairly competent writer.

Reading heavy class! The class discussions are pretty useless and off topic, but should participate because he marks for that. He also takes attendance before every class.. Hes a pretty tough marker, expects a lot, but hell always give you feedback and is willing to help.
