SInce it was an online class there was a lot of work. It was usually 2 quizzes and 2 writing assignments per week. However, you could usually get it all done in a day and its easy to pass. There is a couple discussion forums and essays but nothing too bad. Overall a pretty good online class to take.

Do not. Do not take this professor online. Absolutely horrible. I am not a history major and don't intend to be one. She makes you take 2 quizzes and write 2 discussion board post every week. She also makes you feel like an idiot if you interpret something the "wrong way" and she gives you an f on an assignment for it. Don't take online!!!!!!!

The course I took was a summer course. Lots of reading due to being 4 weeks long, however, she graded fairly, gave great responses to our work, and was enthusiastic. We had a mandatory field trip to Chicago, she gives multiple days to attend a field trip. Overall was a fun course though and would take her again

If you skip assignments in this class or skip class in general, you are going to be in serious trouble. If you are looking for a comprehensive U.S. History course, look somewhere else. This class was very "social issue" driven and lots of important aspects and events in U.S. history were simply not covered.

261 is American History Since 1865. Hoffman teaches it like 6th grade history. She's not intelligent whatsoever, she dumbs down even the easiest things, and she never actually makes a point about any important time in that history. If you want to actually learn about this topic take a different professor. Her "exams" are 3rd grade level essays.

The prof was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. However, she was a very tough grader, never responded to my emails. Also, she expects you to read a ridiculous amount every other night. If you want a good grade, and a teacher that will work with you to achieve it, do not take this professor. Terrible prof

Amazing History professor! This course, The History of Health and Medicine in the U.S., was very interesting and Hoffman chose very good topics to discuss in each class. There were reading responses and one research project (not paper). Overall, highly recommend this course and professor, you can tell she loves what she does!

Attendance is absolutely necessary. She assigns long take home test but exactly on what she lectures. I would recommend for sure.

There are only three take-home exams, and I learned that take-home does not mean it will be easy. Expect to write papers for every exam. If you go to class, and pay attention, you will pass this class. She is a very nice person and helped me out at the end of the semester when I was on the border between an A and a B.

I didn't like Professor Hoffman at all. She would call you out when you came back from the bathroom. She's a hard grader and NEVER emails you back when you need help with something. Attendance is mandatory. Even if you have a valid reason for being absent, it won't be excused. I would avoid her at all costs.

Dr. Hoffman is an excellent teacher that is one tough grader! She is a well respected published author whose main focus of work centers around the healthcare system in America. Although she grades tough, she is fair. You earn points on essays by following the crystal clear rubrics. SHES HATES SILENCE and participation will get you far!

i took this class in 2013, but had to comment due to the comment I read below from someone in the same class. Dr. Hoffman is a great prof. This was a brand new course (rather recently re-offered course) and I think she did great. Very knowledgeable. Also she's extremely friendly and warm outside of class.

Am not a fan of Professor Hoffman. She is a very difficult grader who thinks she makes herself clear but doesn't. Somewhat cold if you meet with her outside of class. I realize not everyone will agree with that but that is what I've gathered so far. Class is reading court case after court case. Very dry and dull course I wish I had not taken.

One of the best professors I've ever had. Really passionate about history, but won't hound you if you don't love it as much as she does. Willing to help you if you need it. VERY good with disability accomodations.

Prof. Hoffman is one of the best I've had the privilege of learning from at NIU. Her focus in 361 in our class was on the New Social History aspect of Health & Medicine, i.e., who was affected and why, much more than just the "what" of history. She is incredibly fair and you can learn a lot from her, but be sure to do your readings! MJS

Knowledgeable on the subject. Her relaxed structure bugged me a little but this class was very good. Some of her book were too scholarly and dry but the Gawande book was great. BTW this subject highlight American history from a different perspective.

Awesome lady. Does her best to help you understand everything. 3 essays make up 90% of your grade, and 10% is participation and attendance. Go to class, do the essays well, and walk away with an A.

Attendence is mandatory, but the tests are take home. The class is fairly easy as long as you pay attention in class. This class was very interesting and it is worth taking with her; she is a great teacher.
