ICJ remains probably my favourite professor at York U. Sure, he can be a little boring at times, but he is extremely knowledgeable and just a wonderful human being. Great guy, I've had him multiple times and would take him again given the opportunity.

Comment:
Jarvie is incredibly knowledgeable in aesthetics, as well as many other areas of philosophy- he often finds ways to relate the material to a broader context. Some seem to complain that he goes on tangents, but if you pay attention to what he's saying you will see how everything relates. Very insightful and stimulating class.

Comment:
He stands in front of the class and lectures, which some people had trouble with, but really what he said had a lot of value. The grader didn't mark too hard and as long as you connected your essay topic with the readings, you'll do well. The exam was very easy.

Normally I try to provide constructive criticism about my professors, but with Jarvie, all I can say is that he is too boring, too incoherent, and perhaps too tired to be teaching anymore. I am sure he knows what he is talking about...but he has no way of making it interesting for us, and I have a LOT of patience.

horrible prof. His lectures are incoherant and he is constantly thrown off topic. He likes to answer questions of the students which have nothing to do with what he is lecturing about and he goes off on hour long tangits about things like religion. Do not take his class...please save yourself

He is not as bad as some pepole say but is certainly prone to going off on tangents and losing the class. But he is sincere and loves his material - though you will have it tough remaining awake for 3 hours. There are better courses to take before this one...

Very easy class if you're good with useless/pop culture facts. The cold war theme and films are terrible (except On The Waterfront) mostly. I really hated how there was freedom of topics in the final essay. He really needs to change up the course.

He's very mono-toned and does not show much enthusiasm to teach his students. Films are boring. Does NOT have a marking scheme and is unfair in his marking. Can be helpful if u ask for help but how helpful he is depends on his mood!

He was rude and inconsiderate and for a second year course he went out of his way to be too hard and expect too much. He never listened to anything we had to say and grading was brutal. I would not recommend this course to anyone else.
