I really enjoyed the format of the course, as it really helped me to understand the content. Stephen was a fast and fair marker, and the amount of work was always manageable (even when left to the last minute lol). The content of this course was so interesting and I highly recommend taking this course to broaden your world view!

Stephen Davies hasn't adapted well to the online world to say the least. He requires students to read pages upon pages of material online, gets you to write lengthy long answer questions every unit and his final assignment is difficult. He's also a harsh marker. But his material is interesting and thought provoking, he just delivered it poorly.

Davies does have a good grasp of the subject matter, but if you take his online class be prepared to teach yourself entirely while he merely provides the readings. He expects you to extrapolate from the readings certian things that he doesn't always make clear. Grading guidelines are also very unclear.

DO NOT BY ANY MEANS TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROF!!!! HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD IN ALL OF MY 4 YEARS OF UNI. EXPECTS YOU TO HAVE A 10 PAGE PAPER FOR A SMALL DISCUSSION. HE ASSIGNS MULTIPLE HARD THINGS AND IS THE TOUGHEST GRADER DUE TO THE FACT HE EXPECTS WAY TOO MUCH FOR A 1ST YEAR CLASS. HE ALSO TRACKS PROGRESS AND WILL EMAIL TO CHASTISE.

I found the way Stephen taught this course to be very refreshing and it sparked an interest in history I didn't have before. It took me a little bit to get the hang of how the course was laid out, but once I did it was smooth sailing from there. Although this course is asynchronous, I still feel as though I was able to stay on track.

Stephen was ok. His lectures were quite informative, but they were very dry. While there are no textbooks, he did make us read a lot of articles. On top of that, he's a tough grader and has a very high bar when it comes to papers. If you take his class, be ready to read, and make sure your papers are sharp.

Dr. Davies is a masterful lecturer, he presents the information at a manageable pace and emphasizes two or three times dates and names that should be remembered for examination which makes it super easy to study and he does so in a very calm and cohesive manner. With that being said you should take careful and extensive notes if you want to succeed

Stephen was an incredibly passionate professor, and I loved his class. The most important thing is to take very detailed notes during class; I ended up rewriting mine after so that they were easier to study from. Make sure you note and remember all the dates, because that is what you need to do really well on his exams.

He's a really bad professor who is a very tough grader and expects you to know a lot without teaching it. He said attendance was only mandatory for specific classes and then the tests will be directly from lectures that we were told we did not have to attend.

Doesnt gives you any books to refer from... how can anyone deal with a subject such as history by just listening you. Gives marks in peanuts.

Stephen Davies is an ok teacher. He focuses primarily on history from what I can tell. He uses no textbook which is a plus, but that leaves you with only two places to get your information; His outdated WordPress website and the lectures. I wish he would use either the VIU learn site or slides in lectures. History class was not as fun as I wished

He had amazing lectures, precise and detailed. He knew what he wanted you to know for the exams and he gave it to you. He was a fair marker. People got marks off his essay because his instructions weren't too clear, and his midterm was a wakeup call for how many dates you had to remember, which prepared us for the date-heavy final. Great guy though

Stephen is a tough first year prof. His lectures are interesting and clear, which made note taking easy. He is a tough grader though, and remembering all of the important dates of events for exams is really annoying and stressful.

I would never recommend Stephen as a teacher. One of the worst teachers i have ever encountered. Thinking of taking a first year class with him? Don't he treats and marks it as a fourth year class. Is unclear with what he wants for assignments and his hard to get hold of if you have any questions.

Doesn't use any slides. All your notes are taken from his lecture in class. Super frustrating when you're trying to take notes and miss something key for a test. No powerpoints, or study guides to help you know what to expect on the exams. Expects you to know 100+ dates for the final. Honestly the worst class I've ever had. Do NOT recommend!

Stephen is excellent. A passionate prof who makes 3 hour history lectures worth going to. Hes a tough grader with a high bar for papers and finals (including writing in his final instructions this will be hard), but respects the content, respects his students, and inspires many of us taking upper level history classes to be better students.

It's quite clear Davies has been instructing for a while. His classes are very regimented, and he's mastered how to give lectures in such a manner that note taking is easy. His assignments and tests are more difficult then my other classes, but not impossible. Additionally he's a tough grader, but overall Davies is nice guy.

Davies is a nice guy with a good sense of humour and is extremely knowledgeable. His classes are very lecture heavy, and doing the readings are necessary to do well on the quizzes in this course. I actually found this 101 course more difficult than both of my other second year history courses. This class requires alot of time and effort!!!

Normally waking up for an 8:30 class on Monday morning would be a real drag, not unless you have a Davies lecture for that first class! Davies is always super informative and doesn't keep you in class the full length if he doesn't have to. Hes a no BS prof and it very knowledgeable of his course material. However note taking is a must.
