My best academic memories are from Matthew's class. He was tough, but I learned so much. It was the best organized and most productive class I ever had. The most important thing though was how he inspired me to think and write. Go talk to him during office hours and you’ll come away with 100 ideas on how to make your essay better. He's a great guy.

This class was so good. I grew a lot through it: not only the knowledge learned but also new ways to think and study. Discourse analysis is a new and awesome subject. I left class excited by how much I can do with the things I've learned and feeling fortunate and grateful. It was a fruitful experience. So wish I can take more of Matthew's courses.

VERY FAIR MARKER. Astonishingly flexible and lenient, allows re-do's/revisions after assignment is marked, offers various bonus and short assignments. Extremely organized and coordinated lectures and discussions. Tremendously helpful in person.

Excellent professor overall. To all of those commenting about how he is a tough marker, I recommend using proper grammar and spelling in your review. Otherwise, it is difficult to take you seriously. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He has a way of inspiring interest in his students and really making you think.

Matthew is a nice person, don't get me wrong but if you need to maintain a good GPA, don't even bother taking a course with him. His expectation is just ridiculous!

A truly brilliant professor. Has his way to make you think, I won't be surprised if someone fall in love with literature because of him. It is really easy to get caught up in his enthusiasm. You can see he is passionate about teaching and he knows what he is talking about. You will understand once you take his class. He is beyond words.

Matthew wants to help people learn to think. He wants you to love words, images, and text as much as he does. He's compassionate and concerned, and moved by beauty and complexity. He’s inspired and energized by good students and good thinkers. He cares, and he wants you to as well. Take his class. Listen, try, and think. That’s really all he wants.

I wasn't crazy about this class at first but Matthew made it fun, and I actually learned a lot. It has been one of the best classes I've ever taken, mostly because of Matthew. I can tell he doesn't like slackers, but if you work hard you will be rewarded as he really notices effort. I wish he taught classes in my major :( And yes ladies, tres hawt!

Matthew showed me the value of being rigorous, and Old School without losing sight of the humane in humanities. He?s a hard marker on essays (I once spent the day hating him), and if you?re a guy you?ll spend a lot of time before class listening to girls go on, but I didn?t encounter anyone else in my years at VIU so interested in what I thought.

Really was not fond of him. Tried to be too 'out of the box' with his assignment and ended up confusing most of the class. Should be a highschool teacher

I hated the class I took but I loved Matthew. Extremely smart and funny, though many people probably don't understand some of his humour. I thought I would flunk this class for sure but Matthew was very helpful and in the end I got an A-! Not bad! I would take a class with him again... but not linguistics!

Matthew is incredibly smart and incredibly funny. His dry sense of humor kept me laughing pretty much all the time - although I don't think everyone got his jokes. His tests are challenging and he expects a lot, but he marks pretty easily as long as you can show your stuff. I definitely enjoyed his class and would take him again.

You can say he's beautiful and brilliant. It's true, but entirely inadequate. He's so warm, thoughtful, and caring, you talk to him for two minutes and want to be a better person.

He is a nice person, but one of the worst professors I have ever had. It was a long and dry class where I learned very little useful, or interesting informantion.

I will admit he is hot, but as a linguistics teacher, boring!! I thought his class was taught mainly by the class and the textbook and everyone failed the exams so there were constant retakes. Probably should stick to teaching upper levels.
