Comment:
Dennis is a TOUGH marker. I have a 3.8 GPA in all my history courses and he gave me a C on a paper and told me (in person) my writing was sloppy and unclear. Then explained that he is just a better reader/marker than all his colleagues in the department and that he was "very surprised" I had a good GPA. Couldn't give a clear why on my grade either.

Dr Sweeney is deeply passionate about his field, and while this passion often takes the form of heavy reading assignments, it also comes through in fun, engaging seminar discussions. He is also my honours thesis supervisor, and he always makes time in his office hours for even the smallest questions and concerns. All around, a great guy!

Comment:
I guess I'm the outlier that did not like Dennis at all. He doesn't post any notes or even have slides to follow along with so as someone who is a terrible auditory learner I just couldn't follow along at all and got so lost, especially with all his stories and tangents. Still did well as his tests are pre-planned essays that I used the textbook

Amazing prof. Great lecturer and makes class really engaging because he knows the material so well. On top of that he throws in a little story or joke once and while to keep it fresh. Reading assignments each week but they're worth while as they help to provide even more historical context. Best prof I've had by far.

Dennis' lectures were interesting, and he is hilarious. He was very easy to get in touch with and wants to help his students succeed. The midterm was difficult because of the amount of detail he expects the students to be aware of, but if you do the readings and take notes in class you'll be okay!

Dennis is an incredible prof, one of my favourites in my university career. He genuinely wants to see students succeed, gives great pep talks, and really drives home important points during the lecture. You definitely need to come to lectures, as he doesn't post notes or the lecture outlines, but the readings do provide some good info, as well.

Dr. Sweeney is one of, if not the best professors at this school. His lectures are interesting and he is very helpful outside of class. He's caring towards students and always open to hearing other people's ideas and interpretations. Reading isn't necessary to pass but it is for an A. If you don't read you MUST come to class; he posts nothing.

Great prof, respectful and very helpful if you go see him outside of class. There were no exams in HIST290, but we had 3 papers over the term. I had a hard time meeting the deadline for the final paper so I asked for an extension (with no excuse except that I was having trouble getting it done on time) and he gave me one without any trouble.

Sweeney Rules. Provides a ton of help outside of class. Lectures are clearly organized and easy to follow. Readings provide much help for midterms and finals. Provided the 6 essay questions on the exams beforehand and gave you a choice from 4 of them. One of the most respectful, down to earth professors I have encountered. Take his class.

One of my favorite profs from my time at U of A. Great guy and a great prof. He really makes an effort to support and encourage constructive conversation in seminars. Gives detailed feedback. He can be a pretty tough marker, but always fair. Highly recommended.

He makes jokes and is a fair marker. He gives guidelines for each paper but is very open on the structure. The classes were all readings-based but a lot of them were short so just do the readings.

I enjoyed his lectures, he's really fair, funny and extremely helpful with papers. He also gives a ton of options for in class essays. I'd have to say that he has been my favorite professor at the U of A so far.

Funny, very approachable and decent man. Probably a stoner but he's hilarious. Marks fairly and gives you more choice than you probably deserve for the midterm and final. Never unfair. Would take his class again in a heartbeat.

Great Prof, very approachable. Gave plenty of "help" with midterm and final to limit stress. Midterm, Paper, Final. Textbook not mandatory IMO, but attendance is if you don't go the textbook route. I liked his lectures he adds his own sense of humour too when possible to liven it up. If you enjoy history you'll love Dr. Sweeny, Would rec. for sure.

Great, easy-going guy, sincerely tries to make the lectures as fun as possible. He didn't use e-class so you have to come to class to get the notes (his power points have almost nothing). Gives great feedback and is available - assigns a LOT of reading though (not all of it mandatory). Lectures could get a bit dull sometimes (but that's history).
