I understand why people don't like Stephen, given his hard marking and heavy course load. With that being said, this prof taught me everything I need to succeed in writing. If you put good effort into lectures, reading, and writing it will pay off. I've had him twice now, and in my opinion he is the best English prof at Douglas.

Insanely hard marker for a first year course. His lectures can be boring, but he is very passionate about his work. He comes off kind of arrogant, but is very approachable and is VERY helpful. Luckily he lets you re-do your first essay if you get C- or lower.

When he talks in class, he always goes off topic and ends up leaving you with crappy notes to take home. Really hard marker. Going to class is useless since he is super unclear. DO NOT recommend this teacher.

I wouldn't recommend this teacher. He is a very hard marker and if you have a chance to take a different english course without him do it! He is not a GPA booster but he is very kind and if you ask for help he is always willing to help.

A nice guy but really hard marker. You have a week or two to read long boring books. Quizzes every class on the novels with really hard questions that you wouldn't know if you didn't read thoroughly. There are two essays which he marks hard but if you get a bad mark on the first one he will let you redo it. Overall a pretty boring class.

I would not recommend taking this class with this teacher. His quizzes are ridiculously hard and asks the most absurd questions. I also felt like he thought he was better than all his students. Doesn't follow the usual rules for wait listing and will let people in based on their writing, not by their wait list number. Never take a class with him

He is a very hard marker, but all his comments will help you for future papers. He is always willing to help if you need it. Be prepared for this class because it requires a lot of your time, especially if you have grammar problems. If you are an ESL student like me, go get help.

I really disliked this course. English has always been one of my favourite courses, however this was my least favourite of the semester. He is a hard marker, full of himself, and makes the quizzes almost impossible. However, he does let you re write the first essay. Disappointed. Wish I didn't waste my time and money in this class.

Excellent teacher, I had him last semester for Academic writing skills review and now this semester for children's lit. He is a hard marker but he makes you a better writer for it. I believe that by taking his classes I am now prepared for Academic Writing this summer.

He is a very hard marker when it comes to grammar, but thats because he's an English major. He is a very kind guy, with a great heart. He's a good teacher, pay attention in his class and read the books is really all you have to do. If you're not good with grammar, though, get help or you probably shouldnt take him because you have 2 papers to write

Very difficult marker, but worth it in the end. Learned more about writing than the academic writing class. He is very helpful, providing you put the effort in. A ton of work, which took away from other clases so don't take too many classes if this one is in your agenda. I'm a better writer from this class!

He's a great teacher! tough, but fair...for ppl who complain about not liking a prof/or complain about not taking a class because the prof marks hard- welcome to college! that's why there's so many students who can get to 400 level courses, yet can't write a decent paper.

He's a hard marker, but gives you the chance to redo your first paper if you got a C or lower. If you got above that and can't redo it, you still have the opportunity to do well-show him that you've learned something-if your work has clearly improved on the second paper, he will weight it so that that one is worth more than the first. Hard but fair

DO NOT TAKE WRITING SKILLS REVIEW WITH HIM... WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD! Most boring class, only 10 people in it by the end... Most people stop showing up/withdraw because he marks way too hard for a first year course. Has favorites.

He is a rather irritating professor. He contradicts himself, and I truly don't think he has any real interest in authors outside of North America, or outside of the past 100 years. Semi-ignorant. From Ontario :| and marks the first essay really difficultly without really explaning what he's looking for beforehand.

He's a tough marker, a little tougher than you'd expect from a first year course, but fair. Basically you can't BS your way through. You'll be quizzed on basic plot elements for each novel, and you get the questions for the final in advance. Great for people that want to learn to write...bad if you just need one English credit.

His teaching skills are fine but as a person he is full of himself and a bit of a jerk. He really appreciates hard work and brown-nosers. He is not helpful for the struggling student at all.

One of the worst professors I have ever had. I have never failed a class until this one. I have my Bachelors Degree already, I needed this course as a requirement. REGRET taking it with him. HE SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING AT THIS LEVEL>
