Comment:
Butler is a great prof when it comes to 449. For 241 and 447 she wasn't good, but that could be because of the course content. Butler is funny, great at explaining concepts, and approachable. The course is a lot of work and you must go to class because she tests you on what she says in class. However the course is interesting and she makes it fun.

Lecture content is sufficient but, needs deciphering due to poor presentation. Expects you to absorb everything she has taught and know it. In person, she is generally straightforward and responsive. However, she was incredibly rude and condescending when answering questions.

Lecture notes are bananas and it is extremely difficult to understand her speech during class. You're better off just reading the textbook on your own.

Dr. Butler has a quirky sense of humour that I enjoyed. In terms of the course itself, I did not enjoy it. Laborious labs, dry content, and not the best lectures. Difficult to hear if you are the type of person that likes to sit in the back. Only upside was that the tests weren't too bad and there wasn't too much content but she marks stringently.

Dr. Butler is one of my favourite profs! She is clear, has good lecture slides, and she is funny! (although her dry sense of humour escapes some people). Tests are straightforward. Course material is also very interesting.

Nicer than Engelhardt (ok, who isn't?). Humbler than Dupont (won't make you feel like a lowly, peasant undergrad unworthy of her time). Clearer than Miskovic. Interesting like Neufeld. Straightforward like Duxbury. Helpful like Wolff (both during and off office hours). Whatever you do: TAKE NOTES. The exams aren't easy but the class is worth it!

Lectures beyond the set time for her lectures. Generally inconsiderate, but will provide clarity if you approach her and ask. Slides are very convoluted, even if you are attending the lectures. Write down everything she says in class.

Comment:
Dr. Butler is experienced, yet her tests are designed to filter the good students. She expects meticulous details and thorough memorization and marks as if she's marking PhD thesis. Worst course in Biology dept. Laborious labs + tricky tests (shorts answers + matchingmcqs). Tests look ez @ 1st, but you'll be fooled l8r! Exams were marked hard.

Comment:
This course is the worst, involves laborious labs + tests. She provides clear, concise lectures, but her marking is unfair on the tests. Tests are all short answers and some mcqsmatching, and seem from the first sight easy to handle. HOWEVER, do not underestimate the level of detail she expects from this course. Time waster - worst exp ever!!

She tests based on material covered in class. What I mean by that is, she asks questions based on what she says in class, but not covered on the slides. My advice, write down EVERYTHING she says. EVERYTHING. Textbook wasn't needed, and the lab was pretty easy. Didn't go to her for help, but she is very nice during the brief times we talked.

Amazing prof and person. I took a couple of courses by her a few years ago. I really enjoyed Dr. Butler's lectures, although sometimes they could be a bit dry. I learned a lot from her and really enjoyed the small interaction I had with her. She's encouraging and supportive. I consider her one of the best profs I've had to this day. Thanks Barb

I took Biol 140 in the spring with Dr. Butler. I found the course material wasnt hard but there is alot of material. There was two midterms for this course and the final. Which is unlike the fall outline which is one midterm and a final. The midterms and final are fair, you just have to stay on top of the material!

This class was like a gift for having to put up with bio 140, the lab component was ridiculously easy worth 30%, and the amount of material was 1/3 of 140. all the material was really easy and interesting as well, and touched on topics already introduced in 140. The lecture slides contained everything u needed to know with important topics bolded.

The lectures were very boring- she droned on (in a monotone) about small details in the notes- but the exams are pretty fair and the course doesn't take too much work. The readings are usually pretty short, too. All in all, a fairly easy course, despite the boring lectures.

There should be more comments for 449 here. No textbook for course, but attending lectures did not produce useful notes. Provides too many useless examples in class. Midterm and final were written answer form with few M/C, T/F. If I had known what I had signed up for, I would have not enrolled in this course. Overall, I do not recommend this course

SO BORING! She drones and moves too slowly through very dense slides. Maybe the class would be easier if it was easier to pay attention, but I found the exams to be the typical frustrating "let's-see-if-we-can-fail-you" style that is all too typical in biology.
