I believe he's retired. I loved the class because he was so passionate about it. Quizzes and papers, so it involves a lot of work, but he appreciates when you do it and show you care. Knowledgeable and sent me a very nice email after the year ended early due to COVID. He was one of the nicest and kindest profs I have encountered.

John is a great prof. He is very clear in what he expects for each of the 3 tests and has sample questions to help you out beforehand. If you go to class, you'll be fine. He makes sociology interesting and explains it very well. He is very approachable if you need help.

This is the worst prof Ive had by far at STFX. Not only does he not post notes, but he barely even has any. He basically expects you to read the whole textbook and teach yourself the class. Sociology is usually a joke class from what Ive heard but this prof sure changes this stereotype. Please avoid him if possible

you're definitely going to need the textbook, we open the book in every class. There are only 3 tests that make up your whole grade, no assignments/papers or anything. 1st midterm33% 2nd midterm33% and final exam34% of your grade, that's it. He's a good prof and I have no problems with him. He doesn't post his slides so don't miss class either

John was a great prof for this class. If you do your readings and attend class you'll do great. Make sure you do well on each test, since there are only 3 that make up the entire grade. He gives amazing feedback and if you go to his office hours he is willing to go over any of the material for however long you need. Go to class and do your readings

This dude needs to take a chill pill... he requires a doctor's note if you want to use your laptop in class to take notes. He never has structured notes and its really hard to pick up everything he says because when he gets really passionate about something his noufy accent comes out. Probs wont take any of his courses again.

Great guy and great prof! Makes boring material interesting and engages students! He makes an effort to get to know his students which is nice! Sit up front, go to every class, read the text book and you can do really well! He gives out study questions and his exams and marking is fair... Would definitely take his courses again!

He is a great prof. But if you sit through his class pay attention. You will notice he says "RIGHT" a lot. Keep count and you'll have no issue paying attention.

I LOVE DR. PHYNE. He is by far my favourite prof at X. He makes the lectures engaging and is very clear on what he expects. He really wants you to do well, and he is extremely personable with his students. His tests are very clear and he gives out study questions beforehand. I wish he could be my prof for all my classes

Dr. Phyne is a great professor. The layout for the class was really good as well (two tests, paper, and exam). He is very clear with his lectures and what he expects on tests/papers. I would take a class with him again.

John Phyne is a good teacher, but the context is so boring. He is a very nice man, but very hard to understand (clarity wise), Sociology with him is hard because it is all lectures.Very hard class.I advise to take SOC but not take it with him.

Phyne has a format of 2 midterms and a final each semester and all of them are 3 questions which means you need to know your material. He marks fairly tough, but is very approachable and teachers the work very well in class. Do the readings and a 60-70 is easy to get if not higher.
