Comment:
Horrible prof. Takes forever to reply to his email, forever to mark our assignments and doesn't even give it back to us. His instructions are so ambiguous and he does not want to help his student in any way. I suggest to avoid him because online is already hard and he does not make it any easier..

Avoid him. Did all his assignments and received 0 back even after the final, still nothing. I've heard he is a hard marker which I guess is true but again how would I know if he does not hand back our assignment on time?!!?!? You will learn nothing in this class and you won't even get a good mark so just avoid him!

Comment:
The course content is very dry, and James did his best in teaching it. The course is also more IR than poli sci, so be aware of that. Three papers in total, plus weekly discussion on Canvas. His marking criteria for the papers wasn't very clear and he is extremely slow in marking - we got our midterm paper grade after classes had ended!

Absolutely unreachable online. You have to send 3 emails for him to send back a super short response 2 weeks later if you are lucky. This was especially annoying when we needed his approval for our essay topics and he would just not respond to emails. Overall, STAY AWAY from his online classes.

Long story short, we had to get his approval before writing a 15-page term paper. I reached out a week in advance and he took 4 days to reply to my emails. Showed no urgency for students. It tanked my mental health and schedule, and I ended up reaching out to my advisor and the department chair to get my late penalty appealed since he caused it.

Heard great things about James but taking him during a remote semester - he's horrible. He has no office hours so the only way to reach him was through email; but he literally either doesn't reply, replies with days in between, or replies only responding to half of your email. Basically unreachable, and not who you want as a prof during a pandemic.

if you're the type of student who likes reaching out the a prof or TA for extra clarification, I DO NOT recommend taking any courses with this prof. Getting in contact with him is impossible as he takes forever to respond to emails. He also ignores some questions in your emails if he doesn't feel like answering them.

Took 2 classes with him which were moved online due to Covid-19, could tell he was very out of his element teaching over Zoom but he really made the best of it and managed to make the classes engaging. Super knowledgeable prof and great lecturer, still hoping I can take an in person class with him before I graduate.

he is a nice person, but reaching out to him is almost impossible and due to that, my marks were heavily affected. Unfortunately, in university, niceness can only take you so far. I expect a complete ability for students to access a professor, and that was impossible with James. on top of that, a very hard marker!

James teaches the course in a straightforward way and is very nice to his students. He also keeps the class engaged and thinking about international theories and concepts.

I appreciated how James was understanding and reasonable when it came to completing assignments, ie. if you explain you are having difficulty he will help you. The lectures, however, were one-sided, and if you did not take the 'left-wing' position, your views were not seen as valid. This class was mostly about racism. Assignment load was fair.

He was very passionate on the topics he chose to discuss with us in class. The lectures were organised. However, everything else was very chaotic (e.g. he forgot to show up, asked the wrong group to present, and did not follow the syllabus). Useless advice, not accessible for extra help. The final group project was disastrous as well.

haunted by regret for not sending in a course eval about this Prof. the course material was easy, assignments were mostly clear. my beef is that he returned no grades after the 1st assignment of the semester, did not return any emails about getting grades/feedback on the final paper or final exam. so u got ur final mark with 0 justification
