Hate this (MANDATORY) course with a passion. Mandatory participation because there is a quiz at the beginning of class on the material for THIS WEEK. Everything is learned by reading the terrible textbook or searching for YouTube videos. The guy is a glorified TA and can't teach anything. Assignments are easy enough but the tests are ridiculous.

He is one of the worst professors I have ever met in Queen's. He never taught any knowledge, just let us read books for self-study. The test grades are harsh, and the professor's attitude is cold. I have never seen such a bad professor.

Dave Dove calls his "teaching" method called "active learning approach" where he doesn't teach anything but expects us to learn the content ourselves (literally stated on the syllabus). The reading material makes the content needlessly hard because it is poorly and vaguely explained with limited examples. As a straight-A student, I don't recommend-

The instructor (I wouldn't bother to call him a prof, he's everything a proper CS professor is not) is horrible in many ways - Very low quality course material, and I mean it. I haven't seen any proper CS people, hands out assignments in MS Word. - Very poorly organized teaching, jumping from concepts to concepts, - Keen on nuances in coding

You learn most of your materials on your own. The prof acts more like a TA instead of a real prof. He is a nice person, but he just doesn't teach us. He only test us and review the tests during lectures. Oh! by the way, Do you want to know where I learn all the materials? Textbook !and Youtube! That's it. You can't learn anything from the prof.

There are mini quizzes at the start of class based on the material FOR THAT WEEK. So basically you learn the material yourself so you can pass but then have to go to class anyways because its mandatory. Classes are split in two lecture halls and half the class will be spent trying to skype one another. Shoutout to Galal the other prof he was super.

Overall, his personality isn't so bad. Often, if you search for assistance, he will most likely help you out. However, the course is organized poorly. Project requirements are often unclear - despite getting a good grade on the second major group project, we honestly had no idea what we were doing. Self-learning in this environment was not fun.

I have no idea why he teaches CISC 221 the way he does. He will teach you nothing himself, and will not explain the course concepts clearly. Additionally half of the class is in different lecture halls so we skype them all class and go back and forth asking "Can you hear me". Probably the worst structured courses taught by the worst prof at Queens.

He may be a good guy but the way the course is structured is awful. The learning material is unorganized and glosses over the important stuff while focusing on irrelevant topics that aren't tested on. The lectures are useless as he does not teach or go over examples, annoyingly they are mandatory. You're better off finding online tutorials.

I wouldn't consider him much of a professor. He's more of a superior who grades what you have to teach yourself. It is mandatory to attend his lectures, but this time is made up of you working on activities with your team. He has slides that he posts online to study from but they are so dry and disorganized that they are useless. Worst prof ive had

Others have nailed it - even back in the mid-90s you had to learn most of the course on your own. Did anyone actually get the USS Enterprise to fire the photon torpedoes?

He does not teach. At all. Lectures are all group work and the labs are useless. All learning is done by reading the textbook/other sources. He has not taught anything. Worst prof I have ever had and would not wish him onto my worst enemies.

Dove focuses on a system called "Team-Based Learning", which means that a lot of learning will happen during labs, in-class activities, and self-study. Although I understand why he wishes to use this system, his courses severely lack guidance and are mostly self-directed. Despite this, he has good intentions and will help you if you request it.

221 is hell if you don't like learning on your own. The hands on approach is good, but would be better if there were lectures too. His instructions ie project specs are confusing, and he's a bit defensive when you question those instructions in e-mailforum. Apparently he's more understanding one-to-one. Best to get a good start early on readings.
