JD is a caring and passionate prof. Course concepts are often very philosophical and may be difficult to follow, so I would suggest writing down everything he says verbatimit'll help you in the long run. His course definitely makes you work hard and think deeply about course concepts which I found really interesting. Would take again!

Very lecture heavy and not so clear. The upside is that his courses seemed to be organized for online learning, unlike other profs but I wouldn't take his class again. I wouldn't have had any idea where to start if it hadn't been for my TA. Flemming expects a lot from first year students, if you're an english major you might enjoy it

I would not recommend taking this class! Professor Fleming talks about large and complex ideas but makes his analysis very broad and vague to the point where it is not helpful at all. This is a first year English course and its as if he expects students to already be amazing literary analysts. He preaches that his students should be confident in

Professor Fleming is a quality professor. He is witty and caring. His lectures are insightful and engaging. I would recommend him as a professor because he is very organized with remote schooling.

Taken during COVID so it was online. JD is a very caring prof and definitely loves the subject of literary criticisms. It reminded me more of a philosophy class, although it was still interesting. He likes asking big questions even if he himself can't answer them during tutorials, which gives students a lot to think about for future discussions.

Papers depend more on your TA than anything else but final was easy. Just write down what he says word for word (no point form, verbatim) and regurgitate it on the paper. There's easier W credits but if you're interested in the subject matter it's not bad.

This prof is a nice man who is very passionate about his work, but he is very tough grader. He doesn't give clear criteria for anything and then marks super hard because you didn't write the way he wanted you to. I spent a lot of time on this class and put in a lot of effort and am not expecting a grade that I would like. I'd skip this prof.

JD is a great prof! I enjoy his lecture style and the way he makes the material engaging. His classes are lecture heavy, but it is always reasonable, just come ready to listen and write! I would recommend anyone to take a class with JD, he makes English awesome!

JD is a great prof! I really enjoy his lecture style (however, he doesn't post slides or anything it's just writing what he says mostly). He makes the literature engaging and his criteria are clear and concise. I would highly recommend taking a class with him!

He definitely has his own style of teaching: lecture heavy, non discussion/group project oriented. Though he is open to questions during class, the nature of his courses are mostly taking notes from what he says during lectures. So if you like this style of teaching, then you are in for a good time. Also his grading criteria are very clear.

Not a class I would take or recommend, was very vague when asked for help. The content was interesting but the way it was delivered was poorly done. He shot down student answers and questions at the beginning of the semester that many stopped participating and the class was 3 hours of him talking. Didn't give clear instructions on assignments.

Lectures are theoretical and challenging, but if you do the readings and are interested in the subject, his classes are enriching. Prefers close reading to research. Take copious notes and show up. Found him somewhat curt one-on-one but not openly rude. Would rather email than talk on office hours. Expectations for assignments, final are clear.

Best lecturer I've had the pleasure of listening to in my 4 year ENGL major. Toughest marker I've had in my 4 year ENGL major. Pay attention to his lectures, it shouldn't be difficult. Don't try to push the envelope, stick to what you're taught and you'll do fine. Attendance is mandatory (if you want a decent grade) but enjoyable.

I can't say much for his grading as I had a TA mark my work, but his lectures are fantastic. The final exam was very fair and if you paid attention in lecture (or listened to them online), attended tutorials, and took good notes your should be fine. He has a great late paper policy, though watch out for response papers: due dates sneak up you!

Hits all of the notes well in lecture. He sometimes got hung up on a certain poem or excerpt for too long and had to rush the last bit of the lecture but that's fine. One of the only people who I've heard read poetry and not make me cringe. The final is fine if you attend lecture regularly and go over the exam review sheets.
