I totally loved Decoste as an english prof. He makes you work for the grade, is probably too hard of a marker but his feed back is on point. He included the class in his lectures. however, he did make me realize I need to stop taking english classes. I love reading but I hate analyzing/tearing the story apart.

Marcel DeCoste knows what he's talking about. If you're looking for a teacher you can guilt into passing you based on sloppy essays, look elsewhere. But if you actually care about about English and want to improve, he's your man

Good prof, passionate about what he's teaching. Tough marker but will usually provide lots of feedback although his handwriting is not very easy to read. If you want to improve your writing skills, take this course. If you want an easy mark, then pick a different prof.

He wasn't great, he gave ridiculous amounts of homework. He'd handout a new essay assignment as soon as you handed in the last one. He also assigned a poetry essay that must be 1000 words which was extremely unrealistic given the amount of material to work with. His expectations are too high for the quality of teaching he does. Would not recommend.

Marcel is a good professor. He is a tough marker, but I felt that my writing did improve after taking his class. The essays were fair, and the final exam was composed of two essays completed in three hours. The content was really interesting (if you like psychology). I would definitely recommend him and his Psychology & Literature class to others.

Marcel is such a hilarious prof. This class is a lot of reading and lectures often get boring. He gives a lot of feedback but its hard to read so make sure you talk to him about it. He's a tough marker and makes you work for your grade but is very nice and understanding. Final is marked more easier but is a lot of work for 3 hours (3 essays)

Marcel is very intelligent and funny. I liked him as a person but not at all as a prof. I found his marking to be harsh however he does go above and beyond in giving feedback. The expectations for essay assignments seemed to me a bit high for a first year English class. Nice guy but would never take a class from him again.

Take his class if you want to work on your writing skills. Content was interesting. Class was interesting as he encourages class discussion. He is willing to meet outside of class to go over problems you may have - and is very helpful. Would highly recommend this prof. He's a nice guy, and you will learn a lot from him.

Super awesome feedback given on the three essays, he wrote like a whole other essay on it! Read three books and wrote an essay on each of them and watched a movie. Funny guy, lectures aren't a mandatory show, he just goes over what you were supposed to read.

You will become a better essay writer! Dr. Decoste does an excellent job teaching James Joyce. 'Ulysses' and 'Portrait of the Artist' are dense works, and his interpretation of them is enlightening and helpful. He is open to helping students outside of class time. There was little student-teacher interaction during class time, which I don't mind.

His exam techniques are useless. He uses passage identification as the main measurement on the student's grasp on the material, rather than the meaning. Speaks very quickly, does not repeat info, and does not allow laptops in class. Missed the majority of the notes because I couldn't keep up by hand. Nice guy, though.

I did not enjoy having Decoste as a prof. He is clearly highly intellegent, but he is not good at teaching. His vocabulary is extremely unclear and he never repeats himself. I felt overwhelmed. Not a good experience. His critique on essays are helpful, however.

I went into this class thinking that it would be horribly boring and was pleasantly surprised. He involves the class in good, thought-provoking discussion. He wanted to get student feedback so the class is going out for beers on him after the final! woooo!

I enjoyed his class. Yes it was boring, but I learned a lot. He is extremely intelligent. If you read the stories & share your opinions on the readings, he will like you. Is very understanding of extensions & is very willing to help. If you have any concerns, email him. He is very understanding. Try to keep up & pay attention, it will help!

He is hard to understand sometimes and asks alot of questions. He does use big words and a very hard marker. The class average was 62 it was hard to get a mark over a 70 unless you are majoring in english. He would not be my first choice.
