Content and mode of teaching were spot-on, but he definitely likes to be right. A lot. He also gets weird about hard workers. He seems to enjoy mocking and taunting them. I was one of two favorite (hard working) targets in his class. He particularly liked claiming we were wrong when we were reciting straight from his text. ??? Odd man, great class.

Has no idea what he is talking about. Gives people points for yelling at each other, he does not listen to other people's views and always insists we are wrong. HE IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR.

He is sometimes confusing in lecture, but if you ask him to repeat it he will help you out. Ask questions, and he may go over something the next lecture way more in depth. Tests are straightforward, and it isnt his teaching, but the material. Greek and latin roots are tough, but fun!

this class was one of my worst college experiences! The prof. is such an expert that he forgets how tough the material can be! he offers help, but when we ask questions gets frustrated that we don't know the answers and suggests that we are not working hard enough. This class was often unclear and definitely a source of stress. Nice guy, bad class.

First off, he looks like Dr. Marvin Monroe from the Simpsons. That's all I could think all semester (google it) while listening to his ramblings. Second off, he's maddeningly unorganized and vague for such an exact science. History is linear, linguistics is a science of sorts, and I just ended up confused and annoyed at the end of every class.

Worst teacher ever! Have taken plenty of linguistic courses and this is by far the most worthless! Constantly referring to other languages that you have no clue how to speak! Is unclear on what he really wants on his own assignments and leads off on topics that do not connect! Literally need to be more clear and organized! 1st time hating ling!

While I don't entirely agree with his methods (for me), I definitely recommend this class as a way to get started learning a language. I barely had to study outside of class and picked up 140 words and bare-bones grammar in 15 hours. Minute-long oral final was 60% of the grade so come prepared...just TALK. Easy grader, as hardly anyone got a C.

This class can be easy as long as you commit yourself to the hours needed to study. Like any language course, practice is required. Be time-oriented. The methods he invented for learning a new language are very creative and easy. You can learn Dutch, German, Chinese or even Irish. This is a good course for personal enrichment.

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Well, don't take it if you have any interest at all in linguistics. The class omits the whole "language" bit it has in its title and focuses on politics. A la Zev bar-Lev.

Very helpful: quick response on emails, allows a lot of class time for discussion and questions. Homework requirements are unclear, so you have to use your brain. Fair grading. Explains exactly what will be on the exams. Definitely not an easy class, but if you are willing to work at it you can get a good grade. Nerd me had a lot of fun.

Class was interesting, but if you dont know anything about politics, be prepared to read a lot of background information. Grad students and people that come into his office are his favorite, but talk in class and argue with other students and you will probably get an A. Come to class, and turn everything in, even if you dont know what you're doing.

Talk about pulling teeth to get information. This guy is very difficult. Tests are 1 page one side and full of stuff you really don't remember him talking about. Likes wrong answers no matter how stupid they are. And he talks about things not pertaining to the class for 20 minutes. Yes I acutally timed him.

A very nice guy, but a horrible instructor! Deliberately confusing and unclear on his assignments and other expectations. Has "hidden" criteria which he specifies only after returning assignments, and which common sense can't pinpoint. Don't walk -- run from him!

His class is not bad. He makes you laugh. If you want to really learn a language then i would recomend him but if you just want an easy A, dont. I had him and i loved the class. He makes it fun and as easy as possible.
