This is the most fun I've ever had in a class, so much so that writing lengthy papers seemed worth it. The only assignments are three 8-page papers but they all can be written pretty easily if you go to class and take notes. He also curves grades up for students who participate. He even loves having conversations with his students even during class

This class is ridiculous for a 100 level class. Three 8 page essays throughout the semester which you are only given a week to do. The final paper was extremely overwhelming especially on finals week. Grading by TA was harsh and no rubric was provided. Do not take this class unless you are a history major and plan to attend every class taking notes

Professor Shearer is awesome! He excelled at moving to virtual teaching and leads really interesting lectures. The reading is also pretty interesting and easy to follow and definitely helps in keeping up with class lectures/essay assignments. There are only 3 essay assignments and he is a fair grader.

Great class to take if you're interested in the complex history of the USSR. The lectures are interesting and students are allowed to use the zoom chat for comments, jokes relating to the subject, etc. He doesn't take off points for late essays during COVID. Reading and notetaking is crucial for the 3 essays. Buy the two books instead of renting.

Graded entirely by three papers (Nothing over ten pages), i thoroughly enjoyed this class and Prof. Shearer. Although the lectures can be somewhat boring, I was always eager to come to class and listen. Take notes, use them to guide your essays and gather evidence from the assigned books/articles and you'll do solid on the papers. Would take again

David is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgeable within the context of modern European history (1648 and beyond), but be prepared to get more material than may be necessary when it comes to Russia and the early Soviet Union. Your grade will be based primarily on 3 take home essays; take notes and pay attention, and you will do well.

Really an awesome person and scholar. Hilarious and engaging, Shearer is one of the absolute best professors I have had at UD. His readings are guidelines, and your grade is entirely derived from three papers, typically 10 pages in length. Fantastic teacher and person.

Overall really nice guy. Didn't do the readings but paid attention in lectures and still got a B, however in hindsight readings probably would have been the difference to an A. Lectures can be dull.. doesn't make huge use of visual aids or anything. Fair grader. Wouldn't be my first choice class but definitely not the worst.

Professor Shearer is very knowledgable on all aspects of European history. There were reasonable length reading assignments for every class and your grade was based on 3 long papers. His lectures were very interesting and dynamic, not a class I would doze off in. Office hours were very helpful when writing the papers.

Professor Shearer is really nice, although he has a sarcastic sense of humor. You can tell he is really passionate about history since he has traveled a lot around Europe. He gets really into the subject though, so you are better off typing your notes although writing them is still possible. Overall, great class and I would take him again.

Professor Shearer is a good guy and he wants everyone to do well in his class. Was placed in this class with no interest but managed to get through it. Assigns a few response papers and three or four essays. Overall would not take unless you really like european history. Not hard to get an A on assignments.

I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you are not a history major. Choose another breadth course if you cannot handle the amount of work. As a history major, I am used to writing long papers in a short amount of time. You really don't have to do the readings if you don't have time. An interesting class if you want it to be.

If you decide to take him, go to the lectures. Have to write 3 papers about 10 pages each. I used mostly my lecture notes to write the paper with using some of the sources. I didnt care so much for the books we had to read.. but they were helpful for writing. His lectures are great id you are interested in the subject, if not I would not recommend this class at all.

Grade consists of 3 long essays and 8 one page response papers. Only gives a week for the long essays. No need to attend lectures; you can find everything you need in textbook. Do not reccomend. Final paper question was overwhelming especially during finals week.

Very nice guy-very quirky. The readings are extensive, but relevant & necessary to use for the papers. I didn't expect to like the class but actually I found it really interesting. Shearer's a fair grader & the paper topics aren't that hard as long as you go to class or at least do the readings. Recommended :)

Shearer is the best! Assigns a lot of readings, but always relevant and useful. His teaching style is more of a seminar rather than a lecture, so participation is important. However, grades are based on three long essays. Not a harsh grader. His subtle humor and articulate language make the class really enjoyable and the material easy to absorb.

The class is boring. He gives you only a week to do an 8-9 page paper - one of them being during halloween weekend. SO MUCH READING, hundreds of pages a week which you need to do in order to do the papers and response papers. I should have dropped the class like half the people did during the first week.

Shearer was very very helpful. The research paper was 20-25 pages long and shearer let you pick the topic. He then offered lots of advice about the steps we should be taking with the paper. If you meet with him, you will pass his class. After all, I chose a research topic that I was interested in but had no idea about and got an A-
