Comment:
Dr. DeYoung is very knowledgeable and skilled in his field, however, his "field" should not include teaching. He calls on students throughout each class and publicly belittles them for not knowing answers. Homework is extremely unclear and don't even think about asking any questions unless you wanna be made fun of. Avoid at all costs.

He has a unique sense of humor that may come off as rude to some. I enjoyed his jokes during lectures, and he was generous with points if you provided good working on your exams. The class is difficult and I would definitely get a tutor or outside help because he is not great at explaining some things in an understandable way to struggling students

Dr. DeYoung, although his intentions may be good he comes off as extremely arrogant! This class was made much harder than what it had to be. He is extremely rude, and verbally insults students. I would not take this class again by this professor, his heart isn't in it. He is very cold, and hard to reach out to. His lectures are hard to understand.

He often belittled students for not knowing an answer or asking a bad question. His class is difficult, but I don't think the content is as bad as people say - I believe his attitude is what made the course challenging for some. Going to his office can be helpful, but be prepared for rude comments. Go in groups so you have support if you can.

Prof. DeYoung is a sarcastic and funny guy. Physics is definitely a tough course and he will definitely challenge you throughout the semester. Although the class is hard, he is very accessible out of class and wants to help you understand the material. His lectures can sometimes be hard to follow but don't be afraid to ask him to explain!

Yes, Dr. Deyoung is a very difficult professor. He will challenge you to think way more than most students are used to. I believe that he does this for the students. I have left his classes with a far better understanding of the material than I expected. He is also an amazing lecturer. If you can get past his occasinal rude remarks, I reccomend him

Condescending, Egotistical, Self-absorbed, Unclear. He constantly disrespects and makes fun of his students, prefers women to men, objectifies students who are not physics majors, abhors questions, and he writes tests the do not represent even 20% of the material learnt. He deliberately teaches theories and history tests on practical knowledge.

Comment:
He cares more about himself than his students, the most condescending teacher I have ever had. Homework is difficult, which is fine; difficult HW helps gain understanding. His tests are a needlessly tough, asking questions orders of magnitude more complex than his examples. Asking for help results in more condescension, an is a waste of time.

He is not willing to help, and is very subjective towards each student and is less willing to help if one student is the only student with a specific question.

Prof. DeYoung is a very smart man, but he tries to show off how smart he is. He offers help to you, but when you go in he makes you feel stupid. He intentionally makes exams harder than needed, knows he does this, then continues to tell you it should have been easy. Overall this prof. Is not that great and I would recommend any other prof.

He's intelligent, but to the point of arrogance that gets in the way of teaching you the material. He makes you feel extremely dumb for asking questions and tends to be highly discouraging. I wouldn't recommend taking this course with him.

While Professor DeYoung does know a ton about physics, he is truly awful teacher. His lectures and homework have almost nothing to do with the material covered on the test. He's incredibly pretentious and routinely makes students feel stupid in class. I wouldn't recommend taking his class; he makes it needlessly difficult.

DeYoung is tough, but good. He gives really hard tests and there's only two before the final, so holding a good grade in his class is difficult. He can make you feel stupid for asking questions. He feels that everything is obvious. Despite that, he is very knowledgeable and I can't wait to have him again.

The experience with Deyoung completely depends upon whether or not he likes you. To some students, he can be helpful outside of class, while to others he can just make blatant attempts to make you look stupid and get lost in that. The latter was my case, and I went from liking physics to despising him and the subject. Don't get on his bad side!

Prof. DeYoung is a great lab prof. Yes, he is a tidge condescending at times, but that's just how he is. He explains stuff, and makes lab (generally) a good time. The reports are graded fairly, and if you put forth the effort, you'll be sure to get a good grade in the class.

You shouldn't go through Hope science programs without taking one of his classes. He has the best scientific mind at Hope College. Even if you don't do well (I got a B) you will learn a lot. Helped me with grad school. Gen Phys II is not hard if you study regularly. Don't be like me.

Probably the best physics prof at Hope. Definitely has the best lecture style and is the most recommended by upperclassmen to lower classmen. If you are going to take physics...try to make sure you take him.

Yeah, so he's an excellent teacher -- very clear and all, and a Godly man, but he still manages to make you feel completely stupid.
