Comment:
This class is super interesting and would bring up a lot of interesting discussion, but the environment in this class makes you feel uncomfortable presenting any opposing positions. A lot of reading and writing, but he's not so tough on grading that they are impossible, as long as you put forth the effort.

Comment:
Thompson is a tough grader, and expects you to learn and agree with his theology without conversation. If you do not learn his theology for the test, you will fail. If you are looking for an informative helpful class, I would not take his. He is slightly inflammatory if you bring up some disagreement.

Thompson is probably one of the most fun guys in the Religion department. He is passionate about what he teaches and tries his best to make the content interesting. That being said, the course and content is very hard. There is lots of reading, weekly quizzes for the first half the semester, two exams (one being optional), and a ten-page paper.

To me, he seemed overly confident in the material and didn't always allow for good discussion in class. However, the reading was helpful. If you read and do the extra credit work, you'll be fine. He's not a hard grader.

Dad's great. (Not actually my Dad, to be clear). Very entertaining, captivating speaker. Don't neglect to study or take notes, or you'll regret it. Otherwise you should be fine.

A lot of people in my section had different opinions, but I thought his class was fun and interesting. He rambles quite a bit and doesnt really know where hes going a lot of the time, but he stuck pretty close to the syllabus and genuinely loves what he teaches. Theres a 10-page paper, a few quizzes, and two tests (the second being optional).

Good guy who is passionate about his subject, but is so smart that he assumes you know what he's talking about all the time. He jumps around a lot in his lectures and the book is super difficult to read. Exams and quizzes require an understanding of the book. Definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken at Calvin.

Hardest class I have taken at Calvin. Exam format is horrible. He assumes you understand what he is understanding when only the religion majors in the class do. Avoid his class!

Professor Thompson is a difficult professor, but worth the effort. There are three graded assignments; a test, a paper, and the final. If you want, you can take an optional second test. I enjoyed listening to his lectures. He presents some ideas that will challenge you. The green book is a difficult read, but Thompson will explain it very well.

As a senior reflecting on a class I took as a freshman, I can honestly say this was one of my hardest classes. People left the final exam in tears... I would not recommend taking him! His one term paper is still regarded as the hardest paper I ever wrote!

One of the best profs I've had. He expects a lot of students but is very helpful in return. I, for one, totally appreciated his quirky sense of humor & true love of the subject matter too. "Opportunities" are difficult but graded fairly. Definitely requires that you read the textbook, but you should do that anyway to get more out of the class.

Great professor, enthusiastic about the subject he teaches. Some people say he's hard, but his grading is very fair. Quizzes check to see if you read the textbook. Tests check to see if you understood concepts and terms. Papers check to see if you get the point of the class. If you don't care, you do badly. But if you don't care, why do you care?

Absolutely fantastic professor. Clear, articulate, theologically erudite, and fair. Co-wrote a wonderful textbook - the best introduction to theology out there. He's the real deal. And he blesses you before you take his "opportunities"...
